Hi, I'm planning on getting a new computer and I'm looking at the HP M9350F. Here's a list of the hardware:

Hi,

I've just successfully installed to, and booted from, my m9350f using Leo4All v4.1.1. I needed the latest 5.27 BIOS to enable AHCI mode for my disks... and the rest is history. Let me know if you have any problems, I'm hoping I'll have an initrd I can post up somewhere so us m9350fers can run a retail copy (and not suffer update consequences).

hey, jherm I also have an m9350f. I will try to create an install disc from a retail DVD (10.5.4) once i get the darned thing.

are you running the voodoo kernel on it? and are you using Chameleon Boot loader or EFI?

please, keep in contact with me via PM and maybe we can get a viable retail solution to the rest of these folks with an m9350f. thanks.

I ditched Leo4All and started using LawlessPPC's Phenom&AMD 10.5.4 release. It seems to work as well, if not better. After a while of messing around with drivers on my Leo4All install, I encountered a problem where the kernel would not shut off the PC, it would just hang on a shutdown/reboot... and LawlessPPC's OSX86 spin seems to not have this issue (EDIT: nevermind, though I may have introduced it due to my own clumsiness). Here's a run down of the hardware, and if it works or not...

I'm using the latest Chameleon (started via GRUB) and running Voodoo XNU kernel 9.5.0, no serious stability issues yet... :)

Storage

00:09.0 SATA controller [0106]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] AHCI Controller [10de:0ad4] (rev a2)

  • Works out of the box, as far as I can tell. I upgraded to BIOS 5.27, and saw the AHCI option in there...

Video

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9800 GT [10de:0601] (rev a2)

  • Works, and the driver is here but it requires 10.5.5. I used the Leo4All 10.5.5 update and it seems to work perfectly in updating both Leo4All and LawlessPPC.
  • After NVIDIA driver installation, generate an EFI string (select "Custom GeForce..." all the way at the bottom of the list) and select 512MB memory, dual DVI-I ports. Then click on the "Import String to Boot Editor" and click "Apply" at the bottom. I used OSX86 Tools for this.

Audio

00:07.0 Audio device [0403]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] High Definition Audio [10de:0774] (rev a1)

Codec: Realtek ALC888
Address: 0
Vendor Id: 0x10ec0888
Subsystem Id: 0x103c2a6e
Revision Id: 0x100101

  • EDIT: I've re-checked the specifications on HP's site and the on-board sound actually uses an ALC888S codec.
  • EDIT2: Did some tests in a completely-updated Fedora 10, it seems that snd-hda-intel (the Linux equivalent of AppleHDA.kext) needs "model=6stack-dell" as an option when loading it for headphone jack detection to work. Hopefully this will give us some insight into the pin configuration...
  • Haven't got sound working yet. After installing HDAEnabler.kext I was able to see the "Intel High Definition Audio" device under System Profiler but it does not show in System Preferences.
  • Here's my codec#0 file from Linux

Networking - LAN

00:0a.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] Ethernet [10de:0760] (rev a2)

  • Works, driver.
  • Needs fix, must install the kext first and as root, edit "/System/Library/Extensions/nForceLAN.kext/Contents/Info.plist" changing "DisableMSI" to true.

Networking - Wireless

05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: RaLink RT2860 [1814:0781]

USB

00:02.0 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller [10de:077b] (rev a1)
00:02.1 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller [10de:077c] (rev a1)
00:04.0 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] OHCI USB 1.1 Controller [10de:077d] (rev a1)
00:04.1 USB Controller [0c03]: nVidia Corporation MCP78S [GeForce 8200] EHCI USB 2.0 Controller [10de:077e] (rev a1)

  • Works but the internal USB 2.0 hub doesn't work, see below

USB 2.0 Hub

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB

  • Not in System Profiler, is there a driver for this?

Memory card reader

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 058f:6362 Alcor Micro Corp. Hi-Speed 21-in-1 Flash Card Reader/Writer (Internal/External)

Infrared transceiver

Bus 002 Device 004: ID 04eb:e004 Northstar Systems, Inc. eHome Infrared Transceiver

  • Haven't tested yet

FireWire

01:05.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394) [0c00]: Agere Systems FW323 [11c1:5811] (rev 70)

  • Works, probably out of the box

Ah.. finally finding others with the same HW.. thanks for all the info in your post.

I've been trying to install on an Acer X1200 with 8200-based mobo (my info in: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=154257)

so far I just have ethernet and external USB working, with VESA video

a) audio is my next task.. any luck there?

:) why do you say the nforce ethernet driver needs a fix? (it worked for me)

c) I will give the wireless driver a test tonite (thanks!)

d) did you ever attempt to get the 8200 IGP working? (I have an 8400 coming in the mail) (can we use hybridSLI at all on these?)

  • 4 weeks later...

audio is working!!!

...with a USB sound card adaptor... cheap. $9. gives headphone out and mic in. headphone out to two RCA for R and L. I did try a mono plug hoping that it would come out digital SPDIF (the USB adaptor says it can do SPDIF up to 7.1 ch) but that didn't work and i don't know what other plug to use. it's not stock and it sticks out the back of my computer something ugly, but oh well, i have all the components working (haven't tried IR yet..)

YEE HAW! quad core computing on OS X for the price of my Win quad core! two birds, one stone!

On-board audio is working. I was messing around with Fedora 11-Preview and noticed that /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 now said my card was an ALC1200. No idea how that happened... but I did some research and found out this is the same built-in audio that comes with Asus P5Q boards. I literally am slapping myself on the forehead, for not thinking of this earlier!
