Dell Dimension 8300 10.5.5 Success - Partioning/Extension questions

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who has done work for OSx86, and everyone for posting their results in the forum, I have successfully installed iDeneb 10.5.5 on my Dell Dimension 8300.

If it may help anyone:

To successfully install, I needed to partition using GUID.

I selected:

Kernel: SpeedStep kernel

Audio: AC97

Chipset: ICHx Fixed

Network: Intel100ProVE

Video: AGPart

I have not yet tested/gotten working audio, network, or video extensions. I intend to work on that a bit more.

My question is in regards to partitioning:

I have an IDE drive I am installing to. Initially I have been trying to install with two partitions, using MBR, with OSX on the second partition. Each time I do, I am able to install successfully, but unable to boot into the OS - either receiving a kernel panic, I think relating to some ATA extension (don't have the exact error atm), or getting 'waiting for root device'.

As far as I can tell, I don't see any extensions in iDeneb that might directly relate to this.

I want to load Windows XP on the primary partition - I assume MBR would be the way to go. Is it possible to dual boot using GUID, or do I need to work out the problem using MBR?

In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas what extensions I need for audio/video/network, it would be appreciated!

--------------

Dell Dimension 8300, P4 3GHz, 4GB RAM

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/syst...00/sm/specs.htm

Chipset: Intel 875P/ICH5

Audio: Analog Devices AD1980 AC97 Codec

Video: ATI Radeon HD 3850 (AGP)

Network: Onboard Intel?

A quick update... I was able to get the network card working - I ended up running a .pkg for the Intel100ProVE, I think from a Jas (10.5.4) Installer disc. It picked up the network card and worked fine. I am not sure if this is a different version from the iDeneb disc or what.

Regarding the Audio, I installed AC97, I believe it recognizes the hardware, I even hooked up a mic, and the line input seemed to be working through the tests, but when I play audio, I don't hear anything - still working on that.

The Video is what is giving me the most trouble. I have an ATI HD3850 AGP. I tried the pkg installer from lastExile here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=107526

I just get a kernel panic 'Shutdown your computer' message. I don't know if this is because I had already installed AGPGart, going to try to remove that or do a clean install tonight and try the .pkg again. I am also not sure if I need to modify the Info.plist file or not.

Audio is working (my own mistake) I didn't actually install from the iDeneb install, but the AC97 in that should work fine.

Network is working. Again, I didn't install from the install - I installed both from pkg installers on the Jas 10.5.4 CD.

Only thing left is the video. Seems more tinkering will be required for the 3850 AGP. As it is now, I just didn't install any video extension. It works, I can enable QE/CI, but it's a bit sluggish.

Other things to look into: EFI/Vanilla, and still want to install using MBR instead of GUID.
