tattoo99
I'm trying to get an RCA DCM425 cable modem to work via USB with Dell Dimension 4400 (the built-in etherneton this machine does not work). I actually had it working okay, but made the mistake of installing one of the recent security patches, and had to reinstall the operating system, and now it doesn't work -- the modem does not seem to be detected. When it did work, it happened that I had first set it up with a different cable modem -- the PCX2200. That modem was detected by OS X and it installed an "Built-in Ethernet Adapter" for it that evidently linked over to the serial port ("Built-in Serial Port" under network ports). That modem had a hardware malfunction so it had to be replaced, with the DCM425, and the DCM425 worked fine as a replacement, until I had to reinstall the operation system for other reasons. So my suspicion is that the original cable modem, the PCX2200 identified itself over USB in a way that OS X could work with, and perhaps installed drivers or something, and that the DCM425 essentially inhereted the setup that was done automatically in response to the PCX2200. But now that I'm trying to connect the DCM425 on it's own, it does not seem to be detected. Any suggestions or pointers would be greatly appreciated!!
