Lamps
Hi all, Just quickly want to say I'm pretty excited about what you're all doing regards OS X on a home-built PC. I downloaded the 10.4.5 (not Myzar) iso, burned it to a DVD and installed it onto an external USB drive with no problems. I'm trying to get it to run on my wife's Presario B3800 as a bit of fun, but when I try to boot, it goes into an endless loop with this error: <the date> launchd: /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: Illegal instruction I can boot into single user and have tried removing the ATI kexts, booting with -x and using "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32", but to no avail. I'm not sure what to do next? The Presario's specs are: ATI Radeon 9700 Pentium M 1.7 512Mb RAM 60Gb HD Pretty standard really. Should I just download the myzar image and be done with it? Or would that not necessarily help? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13289-loginwindow-loop-in-multi-user-boot/ Share on other sites
Lamps
Just thought I'd push this back up the pile to see if anyone's had a chance to ponder the error. Thanks. Lamps
OK, gonna give this one last try. Has anybody else had this specific error above and / or is there a fix? I used the MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL:AMD:SSE3:SSE2).iso to install and as mentioned, no probs there. But I just can't boot in multi-user mode. I've tried a fair few things since my original post, but still to no avail. Whatever help would be appreciated. If I can't get help, that's OK I'm just playing around (and so as not to waste anyone's time, I'm not really interested in a VMWare install - I've got a Mac, I'm just geeking around with Intel OS X for the moment). s800
Same problem here. Install went great, then an Illegal Instruction when it tries to run launchd. I'll try to post some screen shots. This is on a Acre 3624 laptop Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13289-loginwindow-loop-in-multi-user-boot/#findComment-85918 Share on other sites
Lamps
Hi s800, Thanks for the reply. My guess is that it's a video card issue, what does your Acer have? And have you tried booting into single-user mode? It may be a case of deleting one or more kexts (which I have deleted the ATI ones), but I don't want to just blindly delete stuff without knowing some specifics. I guess I don't know OS X as well as I thought I did! s800
Got it working on 10.4.4! It's a 915, which is working great. But it seems to want an id for the display. If it would see that there's a display connected, I'd be golden. See the first display here: it's referring to my internal lcd Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13289-loginwindow-loop-in-multi-user-boot/#findComment-86015 Share on other sites
mugan
Same problem here. Same iso downloaded and installed smoothly. When booting in single user mode it doesn't load Aqua but works. I have a HP NX6110 notebook. me=sad! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13289-loginwindow-loop-in-multi-user-boot/#findComment-90639 Share on other sites
Reaper
Hey guys, I am having the same problem with this as you all are. One of you got it to work in single user, but that is sort of limiting. Here is the Code I'm getting: /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Mdev/console exited abnormally: illegal instruction. Anyways, I think thats right... I don't know if it has anything to do with hardware at all. I have a feeling it is simply an abnormality in this image. I am a big Linux fan and have a great deal of knowledge with Unix systems, but this is bugging the hell out of me... If anyone figures this out please let me know. My hardware is: DELL Inspiron 9300 Pentium 4 M 100 GB HD 1 G DDR X300 PCIe graphics Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13289-loginwindow-loop-in-multi-user-boot/#findComment-91296 Share on other sites
Lamps
Thanks for the reply Reaper. I've since switched to the Myzar iso, and it also installed w/out problem, but now I've got the blinking-cursor-in-upper-left problem. Seems the drive isn't set to be a boot drive. I've tried making it active with Partition Magic, but that didn't help. I should try blessing it I suppose, but I'm not 100% familiar with the command, so I might end up screwing it up (and shouldn't the install program have done that? I mean Disk Utility says it's bootable). The blinking-cursor problem is also one that many others on the forums have been having, but I cannot for the life of me find anyone with a solution.
