neckarb
hi there people, I desperately need you help and expertise, i have a dell inspiron 510m, 2.00ghz, 512MB Ram, Intel 845 Onboard Graphics (64MB) and the most recent version of the bios (A11) i have successfully installed osx86 10.4.4 however the color is 256 bit i.e. basically greyscale pratically imposible to read. apparently the way of fixing this is to up the Video RAM from 1mb to 8 or 16 however the bios with dell does not allow this, meaning that i do not know how to. what i really need is some sort of thirdparty application that would enable me to do this, i have xp and osx86 dual boot. xp runs fine as to be expected. if there is anyway of increasing the Video RAM size without using the BIOS as dells cant please let me know. thanks in advance. Desperatly seeking asistance, Neckarb Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13182-video-ram-dell-510m-bios-aah/ Share on other sites

munky
I assume you mean 256 colour, not 256-bit (32-bit is the highest colour depth) anyway, you might be able to try a different BIOS (non-Dell, or hacked version of the Dell). a little bit of digging turned this up: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html sounds like the same problem. perhaps if you booted linux first, ran the 855patch then warm-booted into OSX, the video RAM level might remain at a higher level. some people reported successes with booting windows first, then warm-booting (eg choosing Restart from windows start menu) for other graphics-related issues, why not give that a try? oh - there's a port to FreeBSD. wonder if its possible to a) port it to darwin (which is at least partially BSD based) and get it to execute as part of the OSX boot process? keep us posted PS I edited your topic title to be a bit more meaningful. munky
if anyone knows much about the osx boot process, maybe you could port the freebsd version and get it to execute on bootup. i guess it would have to be fairly early in the boot process tho. beyond my ken, unfortunately. any takers? neckarb
is there a method of getting osx86 to allocate its own video ram as necessary, similar to the way windows does adding memory when needed and deallocating it when its not? thanks. neckarb Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/13182-video-ram-dell-510m-bios-aah/#findComment-84465 Share on other sites
