After struggling with the error message for way too long, I finally succeeded by installing the universal 10.5.5, then the 10.4.4/10.5.5 upgrade over it. I then toggled the bootable flag in System Commander, and now everything I have tested so far works on my Toshiba m35x-S149. Typing this now with the built-in ethernet, couldn't be happier.

After a few days of play on this and my desktop (which is where i stumbled upon this particular solution) I built yesterday for the OS, I will be sure to find some quirks, but so far so good. ;)

I installed from the 10.4.5 universal install DVD. After installing, kept getting the "waiting for boot device". Thinking that there was something about this DVD that was keeping the nstall from setting the active or bootable flags, I tried setting them manually with a partitioning utility. Same result.

I then tried "upgrading" with the 10.4.4/10.4.5 upgrade DVD which I also had. After the "upgrade", I reset the partition flags, rebooted, and voila, a successful boot. The upgrade DVD must have properly set up the drive for booting, while the 10.4.5 install one didn't.
