Dell Precision T3400 Hack?

Hi,

I am thinking of buying a new machine for a dual boot install - leopard vista/xp

I was thinking of getting a DELL Precision T3400 - which comes as

spacer.gifBase:

Intel® Core™2 Quad 375W,Q6600 (2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 2x4MB L2 Cache, Quad Core)

Memory:

4GB (2 x 2.0GB DIMM) 800MHZ DDR2 ECC SDRAM Memory

Video Card:

256MB nVidia NVS 290, Dual Monitor DVI or VGA Graphics Card (ULGA8)

I want to replace the Graphics Card with a PNY Geforce 8800 GT (PCIe 512)

This Precision model isn't mentioned in the HCL and the PNY card isn't but several other Nvidia 8800 GT cards are and work. I kinda assumed it would work because some of the Mac Pros use this card, or rather use Nvidias 8800 GT (MAC) which just has different firmware. Or am i being a total Newb?

I dont have the PC yet, cos i want to upgrade but don't want to buy something that i cant use with os x.

Thanks for any advice!

J

I have a T3400 and run kalyway on it. Works fine with the vanilla kernel. You will need a new sound card and some sort of supported network card. I use a TrendNet 300N PCI wireless adapter and a SIIG USB SoundWave 7.1, both of which work out of the box. My video card is a BFG 8800GT which is basically a reference design.

Great machine for OSX, only thing i've noticed is that if you sleep the machine it takes forever to wake back up.
