Update to 10.5.5 : Can Combo pkg be reeinstalled

I tried to Update a 10.5.2 Kalway system to 10.5.5.

 

Now I have a number of "Couldn't alloc class messages", "Package 0 didn't get an HPET messages" and finally a "Mac OS version: Not yet set" ending with "Kernel version" and system Model Name.

 

I thought initially it was are kernel problem and tried replacing it with a 9.4.0 kerenel.

Then I tried to run the 10.5.5 Combo update again and that failed.

 

I looked through the forums and have not seen a post describing a way to reinstall or safe install while keeping one's grub loader and other system partition. I have XP running on a partition and do not want to loose that info.
