Boot stops at apple logo

Hi,

I can't find anybody with quite the same issue at me.

My install of 10.4.4 went well but it will only boots off dvd into the installed system, it wont boot off the hard drive.

 

Darwin bootloader comes up and tries to boot my install, but it just brings up the gray screen with apple logo and goes no further, I never get the spinning icon. If I use -v or -x or -s it prints the loading mach_kernel and loading extensions etc. but then the screen goes black, it never gets to the kernel loading stage. There's no hard drive access, nothing happens.

 

I've tried using the com.apple.Boot.plist off the dvd and the mach_kernel off the dvd and it makes no difference.

 

Tried grub and acronis, no difference.

 

It still boots off the dvd fine, I can use the OSX as normal then.

 

I've tried a lot of stuffing around with bless and various /usr/standalone/i386 folders, so I'm not sure how much extra I've stuffed up, nothing I've done fixes the black screen with -v.

 

Any suggestions anyone?

If the screen just goes black like that it sounds like the frame buffer driver may be fubar and going to a resolution your monitor doesn't support... boot with something like this:

 

-v -x "Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x16"

 

... whatever reason the default of 1024x768 isn't working....

 

Also, you may have some ATI extensions loading that shouldn't be... That could be hanging it up.

Nah, changing graphics mode doesn't seem to help, I went to "Graphics Mode"="800x600x16" as screen doesn't support 1280. And regardless, if I don't have anything on the command line I still get the nice screen with the apple logo in the center, so the screen settings cant be too wrong can they? The black screen only comes up when I should be getting a text startup. So I guess the screen is meant to be black then with text scrolling down the screen, the text just never starts.

 

As far as extensions go, I should have given a couple more specs, it's a P4M laptop (SSE2) with intel i852/855 chipset. And the -x should stop all the specific extensions from running shouldn't it? Because it didn't make any difference either, would it be worth trying to move some extensions out of the way anyway?

 

Does anyone have a good summary of the boot process, as in what files should be loading when etc. so I can compare between the dvd boot sequence and the installed system boot sequence and find where they're out of sync?

Yay, thanks for the help but I managed to fix it myself, finally. No big interesting howto though, something so simple as another reinstall did the trick.

So now I've got OSX working 99%, the only thing left is the internal wireless, the ubiquitus intel 2200 pro card, so I'm still stuck waiting for the drivers to be finished, hopefully soon!
