However I plan to get two external casings for my internal hard drives to use them as external drives, I am planning on one being an XP one that I can connect when in my room. But I am wondering if this would be possible or would I need to take the external drive with me? SticMAC™ Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 For one XP won't boot from the external drive on your Macbook! So if you want to use XP it will have to be on an internal drive! MacOS can be used on a External, but it becomes rather slow on USB so the best bet will be to put it in a dual port Firewire/USB Casing, you can then hold the option key during startup and choose MacOS from the Firewire. But installing XP on a external drive to run native is not going to happen unless you have the sawwy to modify the original XP boot disk and if you install it while it is in the machine and then put it an external casing it is not going to boot from it, once again unless you intervene.... For the Rest: "Note: Since a key step in this process is removing the internal drive, this process is best suited for MacBooks, since their hard drives are easily accessible. An alternative method for installation in which a few Windows files are stored on a small 6 MB (not GB) partition on the internal HD is available which does not require removal of the internal HD."
