So I installed OSX 10.5.2 this morning. Will leave it downloading overnight to update to 10.5.4.

Now I want to dual boot with Vista Ultimate in order to play games.

I can't find bootcamp installed. (downloaded the Kalyway iso)

So can I install bootcamp somehow?

Or how can I dual boot otherwise?

If I shrink my OSX partition (its using up my whole 360gb harddrive)

then create a new partition and install vista on that, will that work out?

What boot loader will take over? And how do I get it working?

Im guessing that it wont just load up on first boot... ill probably have to mess around with stuff to get it to recognize OSX.

I have tried searching google and reading through guides but haven't got any idea yet.

Any help? thankyou :thumbsdown_anim:

1) you don't need bootcamp on a real PC -- Bootcamp emulates BIOS. It's the opposite of PC-EFI

2) there are numerous multi-boot guides on the osx86 wiki:

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...uides#Dual_Boot

The short answer is that a PC boot scheme has 2 boot loaders. The first one is usually a chain loader and is installed in the MBR (master boot record). The second is the real boot loader and is installed on the boot partition. The chain loader only loads the partition level boot loader, and runs it. After you install vista, you'll need to install a chain loader such as GRUB or LILO into the MBR that allows you to select which partition to "chain" to. Both GRUB and LILO are actually part of the linux world... There may be other boot loaders that will work, but I've always used the linux based ones.

A secondary option, if the BIOS on your motherboard supports it, would be to get a second hard disk, install vista on the second hard disk, and use the BIOS boot selector to select which drive to boot.

PS: I hope you're not trying to update to 10.5.4 from 10.5.2 using just the vanilla software update. That won't work.

Wait so if i shrink the partition and install vista on the second partition, then I will need to somehow install grub and that will sort it all out?

Or do I need to install the chain loader first or something?

Would the second harddrive be alot easier?

I can probably get an 80gb harddrive to install it on.

So should I unplug the OSX hard drive, plug in the second one and install vista, then plug them both in and change the bios settings?

wait, does that mean I have to change the bios boot settings everytime i want to change the OS?

Im using the apple software update thing... not sure if thats what your talking about.

you should be able to install the MBR afterwards, and have it work. If you want to use grub or lilo, leave room for a small linux partition.

second hard drive might be easier if your BIOS supports it. as you say, unplug the OSX one, install vista, plug both in, and select boot from the BIOS. My hack has a BIOS that supports this (I use it to boot OSX and OSX-Sandbox so that I can test updates). The boot menu is not changing the BIOS each time, it's a hit a key and select a drive for this boot interface.

Apple software update won't work on hackintosh without intervention on your part. The default Apple updates have a few problems for hacks. See http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=109044&hl= for an example of going from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 (10.5.4 is actually the "mobile me" update, and its "safe" on hacks).

well im pretty sure that ill do the separate hard drive install.

and i can change which one boots in the bios...

wait so how did you get the boot menu for the hard drives?

lets forget the 2 partitions and focus on the 2 harddrives.

in around an hour ill get the spare hard drive out of my dad's computer and install vista on it.

So how do i go about getting the menu for selecting which hard drive to boot?

Thankyou for your help so far :P

Also, would i have like Vesa drivers installed?

I tried to install nvidia cuda drivers (the only ones i could find that were for osx)

If i got a game such as halo or quake 4 that was made for mac, would it run or would i need to install proper drivers?

at installation i chose nvinject 512 or whatever it was called...

My BIOS has the boot menu (by drive) built in.

As for the video, look in System Profiler (in /Applications/Utilities), and see what it says in the Graphics/Displays part. If you have Hardware Accelerated Core Image, and Supported Quartz Extreme, then you are good. If not you don't have the right video support. Without kn owing what card you have, it's hard to say what you need... NVInject should work for nVidia cards tho.

OK so I now have the second hard drive.

However im using an external dvd burner (usb) and it isnt recognized at startup so I cant boot from the Vista disk. I tried starting the installation in windows (which was already installed on the harddrive but is virus infested so I need to reformat it) but I keep getting errors.

I really need to work out how I can boot from the external dvd drive at startup. Any ideas? Installing the software for it wont help will it? Because it wont be used when the computer is booting up.

As for my graphics card, its an 8800gt. and yes it says hardware accellerated and quartz extreme supported. yay :D

Ok I did it.

I made an 80Gb partition. Installed vista on it.

Then installed EasyBCD and added an osx entry.

SO simple and easy.

Everything works except one thing :)

when the computer loads up i get 2 entries "Mac OSX and Windows Vista"

When I select OSX I get the normal darwin bootloader.

But its set to boot to the Vista partition.

If I want to get to osx i have to press a key and then select the Leopard partition.

So how can i edit the darwin bootloader so that the Leopard partition is the default one?

Thankyou, and thanks so much for all your help :)

any ideas as to how i can edit the darwin bootloader?

Otherwise it goes round in one big circle.

Startup-Vista Bootloader-Boots to Darwin Bootloader- Boots to default partition and therefore goes back to the Vista Bootloader again which in turn goes to the darwin bootloader.

Obviously if im there i can change which partition Darwin bootloader boots to. But this sucks. how can i set it up properly? thanks
