mactogo
It seems we'll be hearing more of these in the coming months and for good reason. I suggest people considering buying a new laptop should seriously consider dual core if they want it to be OSX and Vista future-worty. As computer manufacturers come out with their new models, I'm on the quest to find the one most compatible/similar to the macbook pro. So far I've heard good news from Acer 4202. Strangely the Dell E1505 hasn't been a little buggy even if the hardware specs closely match the MacBook(what gives?). Is there anyone else who has some recommendations for a kickass core duo laptop? Personally, i prefer one with a 12-14" widescreen. Any suggestions? ig88b
Don't know if this will help, but I'll let you know what I've found out about my laptop. I have the gateway NX560XL. It has the ATI mobility Radeon x1400 which does not work at all. I can only use Vesa drivers and thus cannot get the native widescreen resolution of my laptop. The wireless doesn't work, but this is fairly common. Unfortunately, there aren't any other mini-pci Express wifi adapters that can be bought yet. The sata controller, onboard ethernet, work fine. Finally, I cannot get the intel HD Audio working. Others have had it working, but I cannot seem to get it working. I can get various drivers to load (I believe the Azalia ones) but there is just no sound. Basically, if you get a dual core laptop, make sure it has the intel integrated graphics, I believe people have gotten this to work. mactogo
There's supposedly a fix for Radeon X____ graphic cards. It involves a lot of patching but should work, if you haven't tried that yet. But you're right, the most important thing in making the decision would be a compatible or at least a remedy-able graphical interface. Second would be sound. Not to worried about wireless because there are devices you can get for that, but built in is always best if possible Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/12271-duo-core-laptops-listing/#findComment-77595 Share on other sites

Do you have a link or something I can read up on about this? did you try downloading the ATI drivers from the ATI website and see if that might correct the issue with your laptop? i just bought the ACER aspire 5672 and it has the x1400 in it but right now, but i am still downloading the 10.4.5 patched DVD so i am unable to try this and see if it works and i have a D-Link DWL-G122 with ralinktech 2500 driver so the WiFi will work when i can load tiger on it I've not heard anything about drivers from ATI's website. I briefly looked around there and saw some drivers for the ppc based macs, but no x86 ones. Do you have a link for this? Bak3r
I am currently running a core duo sony vgn-sz110 by far the best laptop I currently own, the case is made of metal - very cool Because the hardware is fairly new alot of it does not work: -Wireless -Ethernet -Sound -PCMCIA Also the hybrid graphics system crashes the OS when switched to the integrated intel graphics I have seen bits floating around these forums the people have gotten the ethernet to work but have not found any files or instructions as how to do so I would have thought alot of the hardware would have worked because the macbook pros are core duos as well. I guess it will just take some time for the support to get there. For your video problem, have you tried booting up with integrated graphics while hooked up to an external monitor? I've heared that most laptops equipped with the GMA900/950 chipset have that problem and you can use a makeshift dongle to solve it. I think intel pro wireless still has quite a long way to go before we find drivers for OSX if ever. Happy driver hunting! Bak3r
I have not tried the external monitor. I have just been sticking with the Geforce card, it seems to work well and i am not using this OS on battery so it doesnt matter I am not holding out on the wireless, but I dont think its that bad. A working version has been hacked together for linux alot quicker then i expected. So who knows...
