AntmanV
I currently have (or had) a Pentium D setup with 3g Ram. I recently installed Kalway's 10.5.2 and had it dual booting with XP. Of course as fate would have it the motherboard is dead leaving me searching for a new budget setup. I have looked over the HCL's on the Wiki until my eyes hurt, and can't seem to be able to select (confidently) the right components. I would like to run 10.5.4 with EFI and vanilla (something I am not able to do now becuase of the Pentium D). I would like to reuse the ram ( 2x1g + 2x512 ddr2 533) in the new system, but I am not opposed to buying new if I must. I also had 4 hds in the old tower (1 for xp, 1 for mac, 2 for data). I assume I would have to run an IDE DVD burner because most of the budget boards I am seeing only support 4 SATA. I am no opposed to reusing my tower, though it is a gateway GT5012 so Im not certian if that is possible. I am trying to stay around $300 I stumbled accross a link to a BS10490 - Barebones Systems Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 - 2.53GHz - 1066FSB - 3MB Cache - LGA775for $221 plus free shipping. It seems like it will work for my needs, and its intel so it should be a safe bet. I also have a Geforce 6800 card that I am currently not using, but would like to though based on the suggestions here on the form and the price i was thinking of ordering the Zotac 7300gt from newegg.com I appreciate any comments and suggestions, and please don't beat me up with the buy a mac or "go read the wiki" comments. I need advice not sarcastic remarks. Thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121412-need-some-help-selecting-a-budget-setup/ Share on other sites
vbetts
You're better off getting the parts seperately from Newegg. Be much more worth it. Synaesthesia
Well that setup will work. The geforce 6800 will also work, as long as it's pci-x and you have a good enough power supply for it. It's also a bit faster than the 7300GT. AntmanV
Could you possibly recommend a better setup? I do not need a powerhouse, just a moderate pc for basic uses and occasionally editing a home movies of my son. Synaesthesia
No, not really! That's about as good as it gets. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121412-need-some-help-selecting-a-budget-setup/#findComment-859541 Share on other sites
AntmanV
pretty much set on the e7200 processor from newegg.com as well as a case and cd burner from there. I just can't settle on a motherboard. I was looking at the Gigabit GA-EP35-DS3P but after reading the HCL on the WIKI im not so sure. Plus it seems like more than I need. I was hoping to stay around the $75 mark I need a board that supports 4 Sata HDs, Single IDE DVD burner, Firewire, and atleast 4 rear USB ports. AntmanV
Anyone have any thoughts on the IP35 Pro board from Abit. It looks good from the Wiki. Anyone use it? Problems? IDE, Sata, Firewire etc. all work with 10.5.4 EFI and Vanilla?
