sm.
I'm selling my eMac and after looking at the iMacs, I've decided to build my own Hackintosh, dual-booting Windows and OSX. I know how to do this (I've done it before, I wrote a guide on the wiki), but I'm looking for this to replace my Mac so I'm willing to buy parts that will give me the same OS X experience. The parts I'm most concerned about are: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16GHZ) (no entry on the HCL) Asus P5K PRO (Looks like it's fine... just not sure about "vanilla kernel"... I'm planning on using Kalyway) 512MB Gigabyte Nvidia 9800GT (It seems fine... just need to make sure. For those interested, here are all the components I'm looking at. Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16GHZ) Asus P5K PRO 500GB Seagate SATAII 2GB DDR2 800 KINGSTON LG 20X DVD WRITER DUAL LAYER 512MB Gigabyte 9800GT 22" Benq FP222W SensEyes Thanks in advance. Synaesthesia
The CPU and Graphics will work (although you might wanna choose ATI 3870 like nickhe said), but why choose a board that's not in the HCL? Get one which you know sound + ethernet will work, at the very least sound, rather than taking a chance. sm.
The motherboard is on the HCL, the CPU isn't.... I did like the look of the CPU. I'm just not sure what vanilla kernel is and what it has to do with kalyway. An ATI card isn't really an option for me.... if the 9800 isn't good enough, how about the 8800 GTS? I'm just wanting to make sure it can do CI, Quartz and Core animation.... so supporting all options. I'm looking to do graphic design on OS X, and games and work on Windows. Does OSx86 support widescreen displays? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121132-not-sure-about-these-parts/#findComment-857304 Share on other sites
Zaap
The P5K-PRO is in the HCL. Just make sure you get one with the right BIOS revision to support the E8500. Synaesthesia
Yeah, the 3870 also has the best OS X performance, and pretty decent gaming performance. Widescreen is supported in OS X. Don't worry, the E8600 will definitely work, all Intel CPU's are. (Really, how about we knock off the disinformation, people?) For what you want to do, an 8800 or better is perfectly fine, and well documented to work fine in a Hackintosh. Certainly you will get good performance for graphic applications, full CI-QE, etc. I don't know about the 9800 personally, but check the HCL, and check other threads from people with the same needs as you with similar hardware. In fact I'm sure most are just fine. I prefer a more balanced source. Seems to effect mostly mobile processors, and even then, only potentially. Is there any great listing of Hackintosh users that are experiencing problems with their nVidia cards? I'm not, not in my Hacks, desktop PCs, notebook, or HTPCs. Been using nVidia for years. It's pretty disimformative to yell "nVidia cards are defecting!" to someone just inquiring about building a Hackintosh and what graphic card to use, on a board full of people that aren't really having any mass problems with nVidia hardware. Or are people, and they're not saying anythign about it? adrock42
NVIDIA CARDS ARE DEFECTING!!! Well some of them are. Sorry I had to do it. Mine is fine 8). What happens when they defect? Is there some sort of rift in the time-space continuum. All I can find is they overheat and do stupid things. I recently peeled a thin piece of plastic of mine. it was peeling at the edge and i cant resist. maybe this will solve the entire problem for nVidia. 8) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/121132-not-sure-about-these-parts/#findComment-857957 Share on other sites
