reddragon72
been in the computer world since the late 70's and even played around in Linux, but almost every computer(X86) has had windows on it starting from 3.0 to Vista. So now I have an extra laptop(HP Compaq NC6400) and I want to put OSX on it, but I know NOTHING about OSX or what to choose wit hthe choices given to me during the install. So I need some guidance, and let me tell you I have been reading here, but this all seems to be set on the idea that everyone has already used a mac, which I has not to Ktext and stuff like that is foreign to me. Intel T2600 @2.16 1Gb memory ATI Radeo mobile X1600(M52T) Intel 945 Chipset ADI Soundmax HD audio Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit ethernet Intel ABG WIFI BlueFlame Broadcom Bluetooth adapter it has ACPI(laptop) which I heard can be an issue. so here is the issue I tried iATKOS V4, Kalyway 10.5.2, and Leo4All V3 and none of them installs. On iAKTOS it has only made it through the install once but I get a weird stripped screen after reboot, after trying to reinstall the disk just loops telling me to press and hold the power button. The Kalyway makes it to the install almost evertime, but always locks up on during the install and or freezes after the install is finished. The Leo4All seems great, but has all of the above issues, but did make it to the desktop once, and only once.... I had Vista on the system, but did a harddrive wipe with a sanitizer program to make sure there is no issues. I have "erased" the drive via the install screen in all three OSX versions to the journal format. but what I really need is what all those kernal options, drivers, and the such is for. Also is it a bad thing to load more than one driver? say loading up two audio drivers? is that bad? I have been messing with this for 4 days and have only seen the destop one time, and that is sad. So I'm finally giving up on the reading and trial and error thing and am asking for help. based on the spec's of my system what would be the best distro(if that is the right word to use here) to use and what drivers should I try. And if a driver fails and crashes how do I kill the driver(like safe mode for windows) so I don't have to reinstall the whole system. I hope someone can take a moment to help, cause I'm really curious if OSX is all that, cause if it is, I entend to snag one of those spiffy air's, they really look cool. reddragon72
it's a laptop and run Linux like a charm, so yea OSX should run the same since it is just a Licenced Linux OS. but I have run out of setups on the Kalyway disk so now I'm going back to the Leo V3 disk, but am getting very frustrated with all this. Everyone talks about it working out but I have tried 30+ time with the Kalyway disk and have yet to strick gold. The furthest I have gotten is to the setup screens then the system locks up, and just wont go any further.... I tried the kalyway disk on an extra harddrive in my santa rosa machine and can get all the way to the desktop without issues, but this system(945/NAPA) system just refuses to make it to the desktop.
