kmkl
Hi there, I'm a newbie here at Insanely Mac. I've been reading and mooching off these forums and the wiki for about a week now, and have decided to join. All I can say is that I'm overwhelmed about how much information and topics there are here. So overwhelmed that I think I need to ask a few questions before I actually install. Before I begin, I'd like to say that I've read all the awesome guides, threads, and topics out there. Here are some of them: The Wiki for HCL of 10.5.1 Portables Kalyway 10.5.1 DVD Release Thread FAQ (4newbs) Install Guide Another Install Guide Dual Boot Guide Upgrade Guide Another Upgrade Guide 2200bg Wifi Help 2200bg Drivers Ok done with the links. Now with my System Specs: Dell Inspiron 6000 Intel M 1.5 GHz Intel GMA (I think) 915 Video 1.24 GB RAM. Was 500 MB, but is now 1 x 250 MB + 1 x 1 GB. (Unsure of speeds, but one is 333 MHz, and they're mixed) 2200bg Wifi SSE2 (or whatever ) 60 GB HD I think those are all the specs needed. Now onto my questions. (Assuming Install goes allright) 1. I've heard that 915 isn't supported by Core Image or Quartz Extreme. Is it true? Will it affect me seriously? And What apps are most affected. 2. I've heard of a Preview workaround, to ignore the fact that the CI and QE doesn't work, what are the negatives of this? 3. Will iTunes work? Do I have to use it in Rosetta? Will it seriously slow it down? 4. Does the installation of the wifi driver fix the problem? 5. Does Bluetooth Work? (not entirely needed) 6. What's the deal with Safari, and Flash + Java? Will installing/using FireFox fix anything? 7. Is it true that Rosetta will not work with SSE2? Are there patches to make it work like SSE3 to make it support Rosetta? Is it easy to install these patches? 8 Does/Will Sleep work? 9 Will any of the following apps suffer in any way?: Safari Transmission Adium Dictionary Preview iTunes Adobe CS3 suite? PS, AI, etc... (Universal Apps) iWork VMware - I heard that it causes a kernel panic, and that you need to uninstall it by doing a whole mess of things. I think those are all of my questions. If there are any more, I will add them and bold them. You don't have to answer all of my questions, but please try to answer most of them. I've already downloaded the .ISO, and I am waiting to buy a pack of empty DVDs, since I just ran out. *Does anybody know how to check the md5 checksum between the ones that Kalyway gave: MD5 for KALYWAY_LEO_10.5.1_intell_SSE2_SSE3.zipaff692cfe4daaae471f528974f5bac07 MD5 for kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso f8546bde2a5b3c7dff47f2aab31862a9 with the ones I have? Edit: The MD5 checksums are totally different between the two, do you suppose that will mess it up? Also: I already own an iMac, so I know what alot of stuff means in OS X, however, I'm still a major n00b when it comes to System deep stuff. Plus: Is there anything else you could tell me about installing Kalyway's 10.5.1 on an Inspiron 6000? Thx! I hope somebody reads this Cya! thechilipepper0
I'm in almost the exact same boat. I recently decided to try os x on my inspiron 6000, but i've been a little hesitant (and upset) due to the sheer amount of info on the osx86 project. Anyway we have almost the exact same specs, I'd like to find out how your install goes (or vice versa if I go first). I can't comment on your other questions, but I can help you out with the md5 checksum. If you have linux, you can just open a terminal and type md5sum <filename>. On windows you have to download something, i think. just google it. There are two md5 checksums, 1 for the zipped archive and 1 for the unextracted .iso file. Compare the zip file first, extract the files and then check the iso. The .zip file should have a different md5 checksum than the .iso file because they are different files, but they should match the ones provided. That's how you know they have been unaltered (unless I am mistaken). Best of luck, and let me know how it goes!
