FastForward108
Hey all, new to the OSX86 scene, but I've been reading up like crazy. After about 20 tries at configurations, I finally got rid of the "Still waiting for root device..." error (sort of). I switched IDE cables and put my CD-ROM drive jumper as master instead of cable select, and so long as I go the rd=disk0s2 route, the error doesn't appear. However, now I'm getting an I/O error with the hard drive. I tried a few things, none of which worked, including unplugging the CD-ROM altogether. It comes up with hfs_mountroot failed: 5 and then proceeds to go into a kernel panic. It finds the debugger, but then just hangs. Any ideas? Anybody else encounter this problem? So frustrating, but man, I know this is going to be a pay-off. I'm installing off of the DEMONOID 10.4.4 generic install DVD, through VMware. Partitioning and install went smoothly. Thanks! FastForward108
Okay. I have the OS working in VMware, applied the Maxxuss 1.0 patch and everything. Boots up decently, works pretty well (disabled floppy and serial port in the VMware bios). If I can get past this boot error, I should have everything running pretty decently. But I still can't boot up natively. It hangs with the hfs_mountroot failed: 5 error, still, and I have no idea how to fix it. Has anyone else encountered this? Thanks in advance... macgirl
Do not attach the image file directly to VMware, use a 3rd party utility to mount the image and then map a CDROM in VMware to the resulting drive letter, you can use Nero ImageDrive or DaemonTools. FastForward108
Nah, didn't do that on installation. Using d-tools to install in VMware; it boots through that. Do I have to re-install because I did the just-after-install bootup through VMware? I used the DVD image install prompt to rd=disk0s2 in VMware and it did my initial bootup there. I'm scared to try it at the moment, because I got it working through that already... macgirl
Ok, sorry I didn't get it right. Which kind of HD do you have and which chipset Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/11801-1044-hfs_mountroot-failed-help/#findComment-74354 Share on other sites
FastForward108
It's cool. I have it running on a Quantum 30gb ATA/IDE HD, 8 gb partition. I have the nforce4 chipset, a K8N-Neo4 F (Socket 939) with an Athlon64 3200+. About the only thing I haven't tried is unplugging my SATA drive or disabling the SATA altogether in the bios. I'm using GRUB, and each boot has "makeactive" in the commands. I'm not setting the partition active before rebooting, just with GRUB on the MBR. (Wingrub, really.) FastForward108
So has anyone else actually encountered/fixed this problem? I have searched all over the place, and no resolution to the problem seems to exist. Hate to bump it like this, but this is my last big hurdle before I boot up (I'm relatively sure). misio1
I had exactly the same problem and was about to quit when I found the solution. Try to disconnect your CD-ROM. After that everything installed beautifully and is working almost up to the specs. I have installed the OSX from Myzar 10.4.4/5 DVD on separate 60 Gig HD. My specs: Gigabyte GA-8IEXP , Intel P4 2.4 MHz Intel Brookdale i845E chipset, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 (64 MB), PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110D.
