richsphire
I have a HCL desktop Dell GX270 (the medium sized one) running the latest firmware from Dell A07 and I have encountered an issue while trying to install. I formatted the drive FAT32 using my Windows XP cd and then downloaded and burned Kalyway using Disk Utility on my iMac (Mac OS X 10.5.4) at the lowest speed it offers. I boot to the Kalyway disc I burned, it boots to the gray screen with the Apple logo, then to a blank gray screen with the spinning rainbow wheel. Then it goes to a black screen with white text that says something about "halt" then the computer restarts and gives me the F2 for setup or F12 for boot options. I bought a SATA DVD drive and installed that thinking that might be the problem, but still get the exact same results. I tried burning it with Toast instead, same thing. I installed ubuntu on it and tried again, same results. I tried a few other images like iATKOS and Leo4ALL with similar results. I have made many changes to the BIOS, I currently have the video card set to Auto with 8MB and ethernet disabled. In some of my tests with other images it restarts earlier in the process, with Kalyway and iATKOS I am able to at least see the Apple logo on the gray screen with spinning gear, but I have never really been able to successfully boot to one of the images I have downloaded. I am downloading JaS 10.4 right now and going to see if I can get that to work on my GX270. It has 512 MB RAM 40GB hard drive, 2.6 processor. Looks like it is going to take me all afternoon to download and burn JaS and try that. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I searched the forums and really could not find a solution yet. Please point out anything I am missing, I am a newbie. Thanks in advance.
