Pretty self explanatory. I installed OS X on my main 500GB SATA and I have a spare 160GB SATA hard drive I want to install windows on. However when I try to install it onto it with windows xp for ex. it says it is not partitioned correctly even though I deleted the partion and then created a new one. I just erased the disk and formatted it as free space MBR. I have vista 32bit, xp 32bit and an iatkos 4i install disc. My leopard is running at 10.5.4 with everything working perfectly and I do not want to reinstall it ( I imported all of my music ). I am wondering which is more compatible, or safer, Vista or xp. It currently boot loads onto the OS X disc first. How would I go about dual booting this setup? Do I need to change any BIOS settings as well? With my other hackintosh ( that I'm typing on right now ) I just hit F8 to select which hard drive to boot off of so all of this is new to me. I made a hackintosh before this installing vista first and editing it with easyBCD which worked fine but I am still a bit of a noob when it comes to dual booting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

EDIT: My leopard disc has GUID partition table, Mac OS extended is the format.

All partitions should be primary.

Mac always needs to be the active one, though you might want to change it to your XP (must be NTFS for this sort of thing... well FAT32 if you really want to).

Use something like parted magic to set up your partitions...

Including formatting the XP partition...

Tell me if you run into any problems...

I tried vmware fusion but it didn't get through the install. I had 3 different xp discs and leopard recognized none of em ( gets to the end and says please insert system disc ). I'm downloading part magic though and I'll try to format it to NTFS. Will Darwin boot loader allow me to select which OS to boot up if they are on separate hard drives? Thanks.

So then I would boot up into windows xp and use the chain0 modded bootloader? Is vista safer for the OS X installation? I know you can use BCD edit to boot off another hard drive. Thanks.

Bad news, I cannot load the main OS. It says "-bash: Xorg: command not found and a bunch of other stuff.

EDIT2: Good news: I booted up with gparted and have formatted to NTFS. I think I'll go with vista for the boot loader.

EDIt3: more bad news both vista or XP will not install on it.

It is in GUID but I think I might be done. It is amazing that I can run mac OS X and I thank the insanely mac community. I think I might know how to install vista ( unplug the main drive and install it on my 160gb drive ) but right now it is not a big deal. Thanks for your help.

Alright, the gaming craving hit and I decided I can't go cold turkey. I think the main issue was that it was formatted as GUID instead of MBR. I'm going to format it as MBR and then see if it will get booted. I noticed with easybcd it pointed to a file with mbr in the name so maybe the bootloader was not compatible. We'll see if windows decides to work. ( worst OS ever to install with other OSes IMO.) I wish my BIOS had a hard drive selector; anyone with a blood iron know how? thanks.
