Inspiron 1525 using Kalyway 10.5.2

Ok, so I know I'm a n00b around here, but I did a lot of work and research on Insanely Mac to find the necessary information and drivers to get my Inspiron 1525 running Kalyway 10.5.2. This is intended to assist other owners of the 1525 since it is a very nice cheap laptop, and the Best Buy deal this week (week of 7/13/08) for $499 makes it even sweeter to pick up.

My system specs: (bold = working)

Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz T2390 (Working with both cores enabled)

2 GB DDR2 SDRAM

Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset

Intel X3100 Graphics (with full QE/Acceleration, more info here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=675880)

8x DVD +/- RW Drive

Samsung HM160HI 160 GB HDD

Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN card

Marvell 88E80XX NIC [not tested]

Conexant HDA D330 MDC V.92 Modem [not tested]

Sigmatel 9228 Sound

Ricoh SDMMC Card Reader [not tested]

So, to begin, I bought the Inspiron 1525 on sale at (*gasp*) Best Buy for $499, and since it is still on sale through the week for a very good price, I thought there might be a few other intrepid souls who might want to try to get their Inspiron 1525's up and running properly in OSX86.

To begin, I got a Kalyway 10.5.2 install disc from the usual source and burned in in Nero 7, at the slowest speed my burner would do. Partitioned my drive and all the basic stuff, then went to install.

When installing you should make sure you choose to install the Intel X3100 graphics driver, don't bother with the audio drivers, and the wireless drivers you should choose the Broadcom one as well as the stock ones that were included already. Install any of the other kernels (aside from the 64-bit one) and whatever else you want.

When booting into OSX for the first time you will want to unplug the power and wait about six minutes or so for the screen to sleep. NOTE: you won't see anything on the screen after the initial loading screen. Don't give up on it, just wait and then move the mouse or type on the keyboard. You will be taken through the inital setup screens for OSX, when prompted for how you connect, choose 'I do not connect to the internet with this computer.'

Once you're done with the setup and are in OSX, the FIRST thing you should do is set a Hot Corner for 'Sleep' without it, you'll be stuck waiting anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes for the screen to sleep before you can use it. Go to System Prefs -> Wallpaper and Screen Saver -> Screen Saver -> Hot Corners When you start your system you'll just have to move the mouse to that corner and the screen should become active.

Now that that is set you will want to get the wireless working. Follow this guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...reless+tutorial

After getting the wireless up and running the sound device is the next thing that we need to get working... Don't believe what the BIOS says about it being a 9205. I tried nearly every solution for that card and nothing. I went ahead and got my own codec dump from a Knoppix Live CD. You can get a Knoppix Live CD here: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Plug in a USB Flash Drive, then mount it as writeable.

Here is the command I used:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#1 > /media/sdb/codec.txt

Using codec#0 brings up info for the modem, and codec#2 brings info on another device, not sure what it is.

This is what the codec dump should look like:

You can download my full codec dump here: http://www.benganzel.com/Uploads/Ganz_Sigmatel_9228_dump.txt

Reboot into OSX. You will need to obtain Taruga's Apple HDA Patcher V1.16. You MUST use 1.16, the other versions will not work.

You can get v. 1.16 here: http://www.benganzel.com/Uploads/AppleHDAPatcher_v1[1].16.zip

For more info on the HDA patchers go here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=32859

Extract the patcher and drag your codec dump .txt file on top of the turtle icon of the HDA patcher. It will run through a patching process. Then you should run a permissions repair in the disk utility and reboot. When you reboot, you should see that you now have the volume icon. On my system the internal speakers work, the headphone jack mutes the speakers and volume touch buttons work. The internal mic (if there is one) doesn't, which is not a big deal for me.

I could post my AppleHDA.kext as well, let me know if it's needed.

I also got my touchpad to do two finger scrolling by following the instructions in this post: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=5419&st=0

Another post with helpful information that does apply to our laptops is here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...=83039&st=0

By using the drivers for power managment linked there I am able to view the battery status as a percentage.

IF you have a Inspiron 1525 I'm very confident that you can get yours up and running as a "Hackintosh" in little time. I do have mine dual booting with Windows XP, and might reinstall Vista as a tri-boot, but with only 160GB the space is a little limited. Good luck, and if you do have questions I will try to help you the best I can, but this is the first Hackintosh I have created.

Amazing, because I just returned a Gateway M6843 that wouldn't run right (ApplePS2Keyboard) and bought this same laptop, same price, and it's running outstanding.

A+

I installed the Kalyway 10.5.3 Combo update and I do have a few things to report...

1. Wireless fix needs to be reapplied - Not a big deal. Just go through the tutorial again

2. Sleep no longer works - trying to figure this one out. Will post back with a solution if I find one.

I went through the same things. No big deal, like ganz mentioned. I went from a 10.5.2 DVD install to 10.5.3 Combo Update (Kalyway) to 10.5.4 (Software Update + Modbin Kernel).

Sleep doesn't work. Well, sorta. It'll sleep alright, but waking it up involves powering it completely down (restart). It never wakes up from sleep (Not to be confused with screen sleeping).

I wanted to report that I am now running on 10.5.4 with no real issues to report.

I upgraded to 10.5.3 using the Kalyway combo update, a reboot and reinstall of the modified wireless drivers brought got me back online, then i installed 10.5.4, rebooted and reinstalled my sound, Power Management, and wireless drivers. Everything works fine, including sleep, restart, and shutdown. I am using the Vanilla kernel included in the Kalyway combo update. The sound will not work through the headphone jack after waking up from sleep, but that's not a huge deal for me. I think just mousing over the "sleep screen" hot corner fixes that. Overall, I am very pleased.

To fix the problem with the wired network, I got a D-Link Dub-E100 USB to Ethernet adapter, and it works with a driver that can be found here ftp://sustworks.com/USBAx8817x_103b11.dmg. I was close to getting the built-in Ethernet working, but it messed up my wireless connection. I restored from a previous Time Machine backup and just left it at that. I maybe need a wired connection once a week, so it's not terribly inconvenient to toss the extra module in my laptop bag.

On another note, it's weird (in a good way) to be running Windows virtualized through VMWare Fusion in Mac OSX on a Dell laptop... Anyway, an upgrade to 4GB of RAM is coming at the end of the week.

Let me just say that this has been the most straightforward and easy to follow guide for the Inspiron 1525 I've seen so far. Thanks for putting it together!

Now, I've been trying to get this to work on my 1525 for awhile now, and I'm running into some snags. I can get the installer to run all the way through, but I can't get the comp into OSX after the screen goes black. I've tried waiting 6 mins with it unplugged like you suggest, but the screen just doesn't come on. I've tried hooking up an external monitor, and all I see on that is a white screen. I've got a few questions as to what the problem might be:

-Does Kalyway require me to have my drive formatted in GPT with PC EFI installed, or can I install OSX on MBR without PC EFI? If it does require EFI, can PC EFI be installed on MBR?

-Does the 1525 need Natit to run? The install DVD I'm currently using has the default Natit added to it, but what I've read here seems to suggest I might not need Natit at all. Should I try burning a new DVD without the Natit modification?

Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated. I've been playing with this on and off for two months now and I'm really ready for it to work :)
