Okay, so for the past few days, I've been lurking in the forums, looking for a solution to my problems with my newly installed Kaylay 10.5.2 Os X. I've found various topics, but nothing to help me out. I'm not new to the whole computer/internet deal, but I AM new to the whole Hackintosh deal.

Now, the install went smoothly, and the OS is working fine. However, there are a few issues. The main one being my internet. I've been playing around with it, and OS X detects my modem; (I have a Cable Modem), but when I use the option that says "connect", it won't connect, saying theres a problem. Now my question is; if it detects my modem, is there any way I can fix this to allow my internet to work?

If needed, I have a Motorola SURFboard SBV5120 Cable Modem.

Any suggestions to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are connecting the modem to the computer via USB cable try with the Ethernet connection according to its manual it only provides a driver for Windows connecting via USB whereas it says Ethernet must be used for Windows 95, Mac and Unix.

Okay, so I tried that. It was a good consideration. It even prompted me to use the Optimum Online installation CD, which I hadn't thought of before. Now, trying this, the Installation CD didn't detect my modem or my internet access. My internet works fine on my Vista, but it isn't seeming to work on the OS X. Now, when i GO into Network Settings from the System Preferences in OS X, it detects my modem, but when I pull out the USB cords, and just leave the ethernet cords, it doesn't detect it anymore. I also tried to go to the Network Diagnostics screen that Safari suggests when I try to go to a website, and select Use ethernet, but It doesn't detect my connection at all.

Any suggestions?

It sees a network card connected (en0 or similar with green dot) then? If so then make sure it is configured with the Using DHCP option once done if no IP address is shown then click on the Advanced button and use the Renew DHCP Lease option in the TCP/IP tab of the configuration window that pops up. If this does not work then posting the hardware you have in the machine would be nice to know.

Okay, so I went back and checked, and I don't see what you mentioned. Under the Network option from System Preferences, I see two things; FireWire (Not Connected) and Motorola Surfboard 5120 USB Cab. Both have red dots next to them. When I click the plus sign to add a "device" at the bottom of that window, it says

Motorola SURFboard, etc.

FireWire

---------

VPN

PPPoE

6 to 4

Now, under network diagnostics, the only option I can choose is "Other", and when I proceed with that, it tells me Mac can't configure that. But, the only reason I was able to choose Ethernet before, was because it was the first choice there; otherwise, all the above three options are grayed out.

As for my networking hardware, from Device Manager, it tells me I have an "Intel 82562V 10/100 Platform LAN Connect". If it matters, the hardware Device ID is "104C' and the Vendor ID is "8086".

Alright then you do not have a working Ethernet card in the machine (we will still need details on the hardware in it BTW) one thing you may want to do is search for it in Google with site:insanelymac.com at the very end of search term as the search function on this site just plain sucked last time I used it.

Sorry about the two week delay. I was away in Rhode Island.

Alright, so internet is gone for now. Hm. Is there any wireless cards you could suggest that I could just pop in? Nothing expensive.

As for my other hardware, I have the following.

For Audio, which also does not work, I have a "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC", Device ID is 7618, and the Vendor ID is 8384.

I have an Intel Core 2 Processor (6320), 1.86 Ghz, and 2 GB of RAM. My machine is a Dell E520.

If you need any other hardware, let me know. I'm pretty sure everything else works besides the Audio and Internet, but who knows.

That is better here are some links I found using a quick search on Google using "Dell E520 site:insanelymac.com" without the quotes as the terms it seems others have got it working fine. You may want to check which .kext they used for the on board nic or there were a couple of mentions of wireless nic that were used in one of the links there was mention of a .txt file used with the HDA patcher which got the sound working.

Okay, so I'm looking over these guides, and I'll be honest, all this nomenclature is giving me a headache. But I'm reading them over and over and trying to make the best of it. Before I do anything, I'd like to run it through you.

Now, from this link: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=114226 ; its giving an installation guide. I'm guessing if I install using that guide and DVD image, that the correct drivers for my ethernet/audio would be working correctly?

But then I look at this: http://www.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/ind...hp/t112173.html ; and it seems that if I install using iAkitos, that everything will be preinstalled.

Just curious, if you were me, with method would you use?

The same except with most of those installer you need to do a selection of the .kext to be installed for your hardware.

Probably the first it is an installer made for exactly your hardware no extra crud in it that is not needed.

Okay, I decided to do the first one. So I burned the DVD. And things are ready; but I just need to confirm something before I start; I have a habit of jumping the gun and messing up, so I'd just like to run this through quickly. From the sound of the instructions, I boot from the burned DMG cd. Did that, then I switch to the Leopard CD, and press enter. It then asks for a hexadecimal code for my drive. It says second hard drive is 81, I believe, but I'm not really sure. I want to install this on an external drive. What are you suggestions?

Thanks for your patience.

In that case you will want to go with the other then it will allow you to choose where it will be installed too as I doubt an external drive is going to show up as either the primary or secondary internal hard drive which is what them numbers are for.

Okay, I can feel myself getting closer. There's just a few minor setbacks. I burned the 'iATKOS_4i' image to a DVD, and installed it to my External HD partition. Before installing, I selected customize and added the Intel drivers and thigns like that. Now once it installed, I restarted, and I tried to boot and all I get is this.

and that last cursor after the J is blinking; and it freezes there; nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a camera so you can take a picture of the screen to post? One thing I can think of is that most of the installers default to a GUID partitioning scheme for the hard drive when you install the EFI boot loader. So when you were installing did you go out of your way to partition the drive GUID partitioned or leave it at the most probably MBR partitioning that would have been in place already? If MBR partitioned, again most probably your case, you would have wanted to select the MBR_EFI option when installing.

Okay, I looked for what you mentioned, but couldn't find anything. Back when I tried my first install of mac, I used Kaylay 10.5.2, and used the Disk Utility to partition and external harddrive. The partition of 25 GB's was what I use for the OS X. I partitioned it was a Master Boot partition I believe. When I looked for mention of "MBR_EFI", on this iAtkos, the only thing I saw was a patch under 'customize' named "Darwin X86 for MBR (non-efi).

Here is the screen when I try to boot, though.

Does that come up after you have selected the USB option to boot OSX once it is done detecting your SATA drives? BTW you may want to set them to only AHCI mode in the BIOS if available there is no need to be using RAID with only one hard drive present.

Yep, I have the boot sequence like this:

1) USB Device

2) Onboard Sata Hard Drive (Not Present)

3) ST32508****

4) Onboard Network Controller (Not Present)

5) Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive

6) Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (Not Present)

And when I have my External HDD turned on, and turn the computer on, that screen comes up.

Btw: That's just how my computer came, I never changed that. Would there be any good to switching it from "RAID" ?
