drvr8
Btw, ordered my setup this week finally: MB: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R CPU: Q6600 GFX: MSI nVidia 8800GT OC'd model RAM: G.skill 4gb (2x2gb) 240 pin DDR2 1066 PSU: Antec Earthwatts 650w (modular power - finally looked up what that was and like the idea of being able to detach the cables from the power supply if i need to) CASE: Antec p182b (went and checked them out in person at Fry's and the P182b was just much sexier than the sonata III.) downloaded kalway 10.5.1, and 10.5.2, do i just follow the tutorials in the genius bar section about the other gigabyte motherboards when installing? And at what point do I try to overclock the system? In the bios? After all the software has been set-up? And I keep hearing warnings about being careful about updating your bios... Btw, I had 2 dell dimension 4700 and I saw that they were on the tiger safe list? Is it worth trying to install tiger on them with only a p4 3ghz? I was half contemplating gutting one of them and getting a microATX (DG31PR) board and a core 2 duo CPU, 4gb DDR2 800mhz, and a 256mb 7300GT for gaming purposes? I'd recommend installing XP first so you can use 3dmark, orthos and oc videocard by software to find the perfect overclock settings. Mod the videocard bios with nibitor and install osx. (For me Leo4all v3 works best) Only a P4 3GHz? That's a nice cpu, nothing wrong with it. A 7300GT isn't a good gaming card. OSX isn't good for gaming aswell. drvr8
the p4 just runs so slow though whenever i'm doing small multi-tasking things like - uploading a torrent, and trying to view a web page, the entire system slows to a sort of 10 fps feeling...ghost movements on the system. I'm on cable modem, so i know my upload speeds are capped but it shouldn't slow the system to a crawl. Which cards are going to run games better vs. multi-tasking Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/115409-complete-n00b-would-like-to-try-and-build-a-hackintosh/page/2/#findComment-830896 Share on other sites

The dimension 4700 uses socket 775, as far as I know all 775 P4's have SSE3. The 915G (GMA 900) should work in Leopard even with QE. The sigmatel STAC/Intel NIC should also work. farukp
8800gt's are great, they're available for 105 euro. Hi. What about the 8600? They are pretty cheap. Can they hold up with todays games? I am not a gamer, but once in a while I would want to play Top Tennis with the best settings.... drvr8
the only thing with the mATX boards is those 8800GT cards are often 2 pci slots wide and take up too much room? sWORDs
drvr8 send me a pm, but I'll comment here because it might be usefull for someone else. So put together everything in the box, get the cables somewhat out of the way, boot the computer up, load xp onto one of the hard drives, then load up the programs you told me to get, what am i doing though with them? moving the mb FSB speed up to the max 1333, moving the cpu (q6600) to about 3.2ghz and moving the ram at all? i got 4gb of 1066mhz 240-pin DDR2 ram. Then be checking with the bench pro settings making sure it's stable? Is there any step-by-step guide to doing this that you can recommend I follow? Then after that I can follow the Leopard soup install guide? At that point would i be rewritting over the xp hard drive? and then rechanging settings and bios for osx? A Q6600 at 1333 bus gives 3 GHz, which should be more then enough. Your memory is already very fast, overclocking might not go well, I would leave it at stock. You could check and adjust mem timings. Then run orthos for atleast 12 hours (24 recommended), if it fails raise vcore/vdimm and try again. You can leave chipset at default voltage (1333 is within spec). Overclock your videocard with software and run 3dmark and compare the score with the previous one. As soon as you see artifacts, system hangs or your score drops you know your to far. When you figured out the right clocks read and adjust the bios with nibitor and flash it with nvflash. I would recommend using the small installation guide I've quoted. This will give you a perfect Leopard install.
