A friend and I want to build low cost NAS boxes using Intel's new Mini ITX motherboard that features a Diamondville 45nm CPU running at 1.6Ghz. According to Intel's specs, it supports SSE3 and should be most capable of running OS X.

The boards are not expensive either, I saw one tonight for only $79.00. With DDR2 RAM being really cheap these days, one could build a very small form factor NAS box. Not to mention the heat and power required by this wouldn't be a whole lot more than buying a real NAS.

What we figure on doing is use a PCI SATA controller card for the RAID array and just using a small SATA laptop hard disk for the boot device using the onboard SATA controller. The motherboard has GMA 950 Graphics and with 1.6Ghz of power to use, a Software RAID 5 shouldn't be too bad.

I've been using a software USB RAID 1 on my Mac for about a year now and it's gone through alot. No problems. So I figure go with RAID 5 and have fun. Sadly this board doesn't have a PCI-E slot, but since this is a NAS, even with GB LAN, your SATA II hard drives will never use their full speed capacity.

Has anyone tried an install of Leopard using one of these boards or chips? The board model # is D945GCLF. I just want to see if anyone sees any potential issues with Leopard on one of these boards.

I know I have to research the SATA card because Mac OS X does not recognize all cards natively.
