platmm
The install went smoothly except for network support. Which driver did you select to get that working? Thanks for your help.
Edward Barber
Hi all, Sorry about no posting the follow up. Go a bit sidetracked. Anyways. SC440 - Xeon 2.13GHz (iirc 3050), 1GB DDR2 ECC RAM, ATi ES1000 gfx, 160GB SATA HDD, 40GB SATA HDD (Vista), DVDRW, Dell 24" TFT, HP2610, HP3210 All-in-one printers, logitech KB, Mouse and Webcam, creative XF-i USB soundcard. BIOS Version 1.5.0 (latest off Dell website) Used: Leo4AllV3 with Vanilla 9.22, SMBIOS 667, Removed FW, installed recommended applications. Have now installed iWorks 08, iLife 08, Skype, Adium, Opera, Adobe CS3 Master Collection, few other things as well (ill check later) Also installed the Logitech Software which gives full support for all my devices. Problems found: Can only use 1024x768 and 32Bit Resolution (monitor is 1900x1200), graphics a bit slow and juddery at times, front row does not work, onboard NIC does not work but PCIe with identical chip for NIC does, a broadcom one. To get into Vista I switch the drives from on to off in the BIOS but again OSX runs better than Vista (LOL) That is all so far. If I find any other ways to slove problems or any other news updates Ill let you know.
steev182
Hi, I'm glad to see someone else has got OS X running on their SC440 as I just bought one and it should be here on thursday What network card are you using? Or is it the one that Dell has as an optional extra? I'll be doing the little PCI-e mod to allow a graphics card into the 8x slot (its a nVidia 8500GT that I found.) I also ordered a 500GB hard drive and a friend is giving me his 5.1 surround sound system. What are you planning on using your SC440 for? My plan is to get OSX Server onto it somehow and use it to serve my MacBook, sister's iBook and the Mac Mini that its replacing. It'll also stream media to an Xbox 360, AirPort Express with Airtunes and a PS3, then I'll mess about with Apache and iChat server and automated usenet downloads If you have any advice on setting it up, I'd be really appreciative, thanks, Steve
Jim5055
Working: SC440 3.0GHz Pentium D with 4G memory using Leo4Allv3. Initially tried "as is" (ie was set up for PCLinuxos 2007) with a PCI FX5200 graphic installed and a second HDD installed. Well did not have much success. Removed the second HDD and got much further in the boot to the point that the graphic startup failed and subsequently the windows manger startup failed - strong hint here to remove the graphic which I did . . . ie now back to as near a vanilla system as I could and had better success. Options selected at this point were: ACPI - 1.2.1 SMBIOS - DDR667 Kernel - 9.2.2 Chipsets - old Nforce (due to possible kernel panic due to SATA causing reboots), Intel-ICHx, Nvidia, Network/Broadcom Remove FW To do: 1. I need to get a better graphic running (need to do the PCIEx4 slot mod) as the mobo based graphic with VGA output has an offset to the left I cannot get rid of and besides is limited to 1024x768. Interim Fix. (will get you running but no OpenGL aka Quartz - read following) Got the PCI bus FX5200 running ok. Booted using the MOBO graphic to get to a working desktop. Downloaded and installed the GEForce package universal installer from here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...rt=#entry461785 Note is took a while to finalize the installation - be patient. The system will reboot after the install - I killed the power at the safe moment - put back the PCI FX5200 and the system came up with the OS X desktop. All display resolutions are available. 2. Find out why second SATA hard drive mucks things up - Fixed Once the system is running however the second disk CAN be re-connected and it IS recognized. ie disconnect only during the install process 3. Get gigE running- Fixed Installed a Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter. OSx86 Hardware guide claims needs STA_2500CardBus driver but ran out of the box with no additional driver needed. Reports in system profiler as "Third Party wireless Card" Installed REPOTEC PCIEx1 gigE adapter. Uses the Realtek RTL8168B chipset. Driver was already on the machine. If not a MAC OS driver can be downloaded easily enough Issues: Fixed - TimeMachine runs but the GUI is not functional. I suspect the FX5200 is too slow and does not have enough features Fixed - FrontRow does not work - blank screen (as noted elsewhere) - same issue I feel. Fixed - I will use XBoxMediaCentre for OSX in any case. No does not work, seems FX5200 (or driver) is simply not up to it. Edit - Front row, XBMC and timemachine need OpenGL aka Quartx Extreme support running - the above video drivers do not do it. Find the NVInstallerV.41.pkg drivers ( try http://www.mediafire.com/?sjd9fasl9do ) and during install select NVinject for 128MB cards and Quartz Extreme will be supperted and all the above will run. Edit: since updated to GeForce 9600GT running x4 speed in hacked x4 slot and Q6600 processor.
shagui
What about ACPI on this machine? I installed from Retail Leopard 10.5.6. Everything but the gigE interface and ACPI is solved. I´ve solved the network interface problem adding an additional PCI interface, but ACPI problem, persists: the machine does not shut down properly. System will not power off but try restart and when get to the BIOS prompt, THEN power off. Yes, a late post but added for others that might find this thread. I am also interested in how you installed from a retail 10.5.6 disk. Can you post details?
