Detosx
I have a GUID partitioned hard drive, with Vista/iATKOS/iATKOS. I use the second iATKOS as a test bed. I decided to delete and install XP on it so that I could update the laptop's bios. A pain but I don't have a spare USB dongle. I then formated the XP partition and came across a largely undocumented gparted problem, which I posted a convoluted solution to, then installed iATKOS, migrated the Apps. However, installing XP has understandably messed up Vista boot. I tried a Repair from vista DVD but no joy, nothing visible to it to repair. I double checked that the Vista partition is flagged as active. It is and all of the data is still there. How do I recover Vista boot? Detosx
I have since reinstalled the Darwin bootloader but still unable to link to Vista or get the DVD to see the partition to repair it. Anyone know a workaround. Installing Vista saps your will to live! Detosx
Hi, have you tried this solution using Bootsect.exe? Thanks Haxi, no that is one I haven't tried and will try this evening. It doesn't even show up on the darwin bootloader beyond as a blank space. The partition is in tact and the data still there. Couldn't face reinstalling and reactivating Vista. I posted on uphuck's forum but no takers. I can understand people's dislike of Vista but it is usueful to run it natively sometimes, with games and so on, rather than under Parallels. Thanks for responding, will report back later. Detosx
In the end reinstalling the Darwin bootloader to the other iATKOS partition did the trick; Vista Repair was able to see where Vista was at and make the repair. Though Vista no longer shows up on the Darwin bootloader as 'Foreign boot' as it did on the old Darwin bootloader, pre the XP mishap, if you key up to the empty space where the Foreign Boot entry was and press enter... Vista boots. Thanks again to Haxi, didn't get to try your suggestion because Repair spotted Vista straight off this time and so I didn't need to go to command. I will bookmark that one for a rainy day, just in case! Who knows, it might just help someone out there in googleland who will hopefully add their experiences. What did we learn today? We learned, get a one terrabyte drive and image your various rigs to it. The next question would be, what's best for imaging a GUID drive, byte-by-byte? I use Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1 for cloning drives (download here).....it will choose block by block if it can, based on source versus tartget volume sizes......I boot into OS X with cpus=1 maxmem=2048 -v to be on the safe side.....and it has alsways worked for me.... Detosx
It can clone a GUID, though? With EFI and Vista? I had used it in the past to clone invidual partitions and was impressed. Didn't know it could do that, Haxi, thanks, will investigate. Didn't know it could do that, Haxi, thanks, will investigate. Just to clarify, I use Carbon Copy Cloner on HFS+ Extended formatted volumes only..... As regards it handling GPT i.e. GUID I see no indication that it cannot....see http://www.bombich.com/software/docs/CCCHe...tent/clone.html I have yet to find a reason to clone my Vista installation because I use Vista 64 Ultimate so seldom......and the Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions include Windows Complete PC Backup and Restore, which is a comprehensive, image-based backup tool that enables the recovery of the entire system...... Cloning an NTFS volume requires other software if you have XP, or Vista Home Basic or Premium.....you could try Winclone 2.0 which runs from within OS X.........it was designed to clone Bootcamp partition Windows installations......see http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/ If, however, you did not want to risk your XP or Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium edition installation, then you can use Clone Genius....see http://www.spotmau.com/products/package/clone_genius.html Cloning a bootable Ubuntu volume can be done via the *nix Terminal and the dd command line.....
