pyrogator
I have both XP and OSX installed and working. I can use Acronis OS Selector as a boot manager, but the problem with it is it takes forever to boot with. Not sure if it has something to do with the large SATA drives I have, but whatever it is, I would like to find an alternative boot manager to use. I have used GRUB in the past, but only with linux installed. Do any of you have any suggestions? Could I use a linux live cd to install GRUB (installing it in windows is beyond the scope of my knowledge at this time) without actually installing linux? MiJKa
Grub seems (to ME, let me clear that up right off the bat) to be the best option. It seems faster than acronisOS selector and yes, you CAN install it off a liveCD. I know for a fact you can install it off the ubuntu live cd. There are at least two different ways of going about it I know of. Both can be found with a bit of googling, since, offhand, without having a terminal or ubuntu live cd open in front of me, I might just write something stupid in the way of commands. It can be done though. And it can be made to work. (I know this, because I have installed grub without a corresponding linux installation.) I say go grub! kytzu
or use chain0 method, you just copy a file from OSX partition to windows partition and add it to boot.ini, there are a lot of threads about it on forum Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113123-recommend-a-boot-manager-please/#findComment-801632 Share on other sites
IrishEyes
Chain0 worked for me on my first hackintosh, but stubbornly refuses to do so on my new machine (Asus P5K-VM, 3GHz Core2Duo, 2 x SATA drives, XP on one, OSX on the other). I keep getting the HAL.DLL error. Must try Grub. EDIT: All working now, should have checked that I had chain0 on the c: drive! Well, I got GRUB installed by installing Ubuntu on a third drive (I was too tired to bother trying to install it off the live cd). Now I just need a way to edit the menu.lst from windows or osx so I can get rid of unbuntu and convert the drive back to my osx data drive. Thanks for the hints, though. Reíníer
I'd use tboot in the windows boot.ini. Worked fine for me. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/113123-recommend-a-boot-manager-please/#findComment-808939 Share on other sites
Macslap
I'd use tboot in the windows boot.ini. Worked fine for me. tboot doesn't work tho if you have OS X installed on a separate drive.
