There aren't a lot of good Broadcom or Atheros mini pci cards available on eBay, so I'm wondering if anyone has had success with the Atheros AR5BMB5.

I've done some searching, but the forums are sparse with information on the AR5BMB5. I know the AR5BMB6 is guaranteed working, but at present rate the price of those on eBay is...above my limit.

If anyone can help with the AR5BMB5, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

The AR5BMB5 has a known defect and I do not recommend this card but it can be made to work.

The problem is it wont be recognized as a real Airport Extreme card and you cannot have it automatically connect to any network because the machine will KP.

This means that you cannot remember networks you have joined and you cannot remember passwords or keys, if you forget this rule then you can't boot into the OS without disabling the extensions.

As long as you don't mind doing it manually it can be used but again I don't recommend this card.

I use and sell new Broadcom 802.11b/g miniPCI cards that identify themselves as real Airport Extreme card (not third party cards) for $24.95 shipped, no software modification is required and I've been told that this price is very reasonable for a plug'n'play solution.

Hi I managed to get the Atheros AR5BMB5 card working with iATKOS 2.0 (running genuine apple kernel)- but since upgrading to iATKOS 4.0 (once again running genuine apple kernel) and now the card doesn't work anymore on my Acer Aspire 3680. Although since upgrading i have managed to get the onboard gigabit LAN (Marvell Yukon to work so thats a plus. My question is would you be willing to sell one of these cards (The broadcom one's) to an australian guy and post it out here if i paid the postage cost and, if so give us a buzz on here :). Cheers. Troy :)
