Update:

I never got this working. I tried installing with a parallel ATA drive. The installation went fine, but when I rebooted, the thing wouldn't boot. I tried several combinations of BIOS configuration of the disk controllers (have several options of SATA+PATA, etc.) but still no luck. It showed a message about boot-plist-somethingorother, but I don't remember exactly what it was.

I did notice some weirdness with partitioning. Instead of the regular partition table location, OS X on Intel uses one at the beginning of the disk and one at the end, leaving the regular partition table showing just one big partition. I forget the name of this; it's not specific to Apple.

If I find out any more, I'll definitely come back and post it here.

Success with 10.4.6

I started over with the SATA drive using OS X 10.4.6 (MD5 sum of DVD image: bd341cbbbe3b63e31e6ab8399fcedaf1; purportedly created by "applying `JaS.INTEL.AMD.10.4.6.PPF.For.Myzar.10.4.5.iso' to the `myzar 10.4.5 install iso'"). The installation went smoothly and the system boots. Things seem a little sluggish compared to 10.3 on my Pismo (500MHz G3) but I suspect this may be due to the fact that I did not select the 10.4.6.GMA900.Support package for installation. I'll followup here when I have more information.

This seems to have been the case. After I re-installed with the GMA900 support package, more of the spiffy animated effects showed up (indicating, I suppose, that Quartz Extreme was working).

I still feel underwhelmed by the performance I experience when just poking around, browsing the Web, etc., but XBench benchmarks look good:

Does anyone see anything unexpected in there?
