onixwj
Update: I never got this working. I tried installing with a parallel ATA drive. The installation went fine, but when I rebooted, the thing wouldn't boot. I tried several combinations of BIOS configuration of the disk controllers (have several options of SATA+PATA, etc.) but still no luck. It showed a message about boot-plist-somethingorother, but I don't remember exactly what it was. I did notice some weirdness with partitioning. Instead of the regular partition table location, OS X on Intel uses one at the beginning of the disk and one at the end, leaving the regular partition table showing just one big partition. I forget the name of this; it's not specific to Apple. If I find out any more, I'll definitely come back and post it here. onixwj
Success with 10.4.6 I started over with the SATA drive using OS X 10.4.6 (MD5 sum of DVD image: bd341cbbbe3b63e31e6ab8399fcedaf1; purportedly created by "applying `JaS.INTEL.AMD.10.4.6.PPF.For.Myzar.10.4.5.iso' to the `myzar 10.4.5 install iso'"). The installation went smoothly and the system boots. Things seem a little sluggish compared to 10.3 on my Pismo (500MHz G3) but I suspect this may be due to the fact that I did not select the 10.4.6.GMA900.Support package for installation. I'll followup here when I have more information. After I re-installed with the GMA900 support package, more of the spiffy animated effects showed up (indicating, I suppose, that Quartz Extreme was working). I still feel underwhelmed by the performance I experience when just poking around, browsing the Web, etc., but XBench benchmarks look good: Results 45.13 System Info Xbench Version 1.2 System Version 10.4.6 (8I1119) Physical RAM 1024 MB Model ADP2,1 Drive Type ST3300831AS CPU Test 61.09 GCD Loop 81.06 4.27 Mops/sec Floating Point Basic 72.92 1.73 Gflop/sec vecLib FFT 44.50 1.47 Gflop/sec Floating Point Library 58.99 10.27 Mops/sec Thread Test 96.42 Computation 71.11 1.44 Mops/sec, 4 threads Lock Contention 149.68 6.44 Mlocks/sec, 4 threads Memory Test 55.80 System 45.10 Allocate 48.88 179.52 Kalloc/sec Fill 41.14 2000.42 MB/sec Copy 45.96 949.19 MB/sec Stream 73.17 Copy 70.59 1458.05 MB/sec Scale 71.51 1477.37 MB/sec Add 75.97 1618.22 MB/sec Triad 74.91 1602.41 MB/sec Quartz Graphics Test 38.96 Line 31.69 2.11 Klines/sec [50% alpha] Rectangle 30.47 9.10 Krects/sec [50% alpha] Circle 31.89 2.60 Kcircles/sec [50% alpha] Bezier 61.11 1.54 Kbeziers/sec [50% alpha] Text 61.58 3.85 Kchars/sec OpenGL Graphics Test 164.82 Spinning Squares 164.82 209.08 frames/sec User Interface Test 19.38 Elements 19.38 88.94 refresh/sec Disk Test 36.87 Sequential 96.93 Uncached Write 106.46 65.37 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 102.04 57.73 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 74.96 21.94 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 114.50 57.55 MB/sec [256K blocks] Random 22.77 Uncached Write 7.02 0.74 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Write 66.36 21.24 MB/sec [256K blocks] Uncached Read 92.89 0.66 MB/sec [4K blocks] Uncached Read 134.33 24.93 MB/sec [256K blocks] Does anyone see anything unexpected in there?
