Here's the issue:

Set up a blank partition for OSX on the hdd, marked it as active (boot flag) using GParted livecd. Popped the kalyway 10.5.2 amd dvd in and rebooted, picked boot from cd.

Darwin loads up, I typed -v then booted.

After a while, the 'Mac OS X' pick your language screen pops up.

HOWEVER, at this point neither the USB keyboard or mouse are working! (no red light underneath confirms the optical mouse isn't working). So I cannot continue with the install process (not being able to select English language).

I have tried every usb port, different combinations plugged in at boot: keyboard+mouse/keyboard only/mouse only, and have tried booting with -v, -x, or just normally, with identical results each time. I have also tried using the zephyroth 10.5.2 rev1 amd dvd, with no further success.

Also, strangely, after this happens (reach the language picking screen), the keyboard and mouse remain undetected after a reboot (i.e. cannot use F2 / del / Esc to enter bios or select boot medium during POST). To get the keyboard working again, i have to boot up and hold down a key (eg Del) untill i get a clicking sound from the PC speaker. Then it seems to work again.

I'm guessing this could be a USB driver issue? strange though, as i'm not even able to use my generic usb keyboard / mouse during install.

I have also tried a different usb keyboard and a PS/2 keyboard, with no success.

Any ideas? Thanks

can you try plugging in some usb device like an ipod to check if the system detects it at the installation screen

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, though how would I be able to tell if it is detected or not? I can only get to the "Use English for the main language" selection screen (the first time you see a graphical screen).

if you are using an ipod, look at it and see if it displays "do not disconnect". also check your bios if usb devices for keyboard/mouse(i cant remember what is the option called) is set to enable.

edit: try zephyroth 10.5.2 rev2 / leo4all

Ok, i've tried booting the dvd with first a usb key - no change

However, when I plugged the ipod in and booted, I got the "do not disconnect" screen for about 4 seconds mid-boot, however afterwards it returned to the normal ipod screen, showing "charging". Also, no change to keyboard / mouse functionality with ipod plugged in.

One thing: the time I booted with the iPod plugged in and the -v boot flag, I got a whole lot of errors with lines starting like:

USB: 65.921 ControlTransaction

and

USB: AppleUSBEHCI[0x44880000]

don't know if this is of any use?

USB 1.1+2.0 support, USB keyboard support and USB mouse support are all set to Enabled in the BIOS

EDIT: once the language selection screen loads up, the ipod stops 'charging', returns to normal state (as though unplugged)

you want to try booting in to the installation with NO USB attached to your com. after everything is loaded, the screen where it asks you to select your language, plug your usb keyboard/mouse in. see if it works.

Ok, I tried as you said, setting CDROM to first boot priority in bios, then booting with the dvd in with No keyboard/mouse attached

However, as soon as the DVD boots, I get the following error:

System config file '/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist' not found

Now I can't boot at all without getting this error, keyboard or no keyboard!?

EDIT: the fifth time round, I managed to boot again with the keyboard plugged in to get past above ^ error. I then unplugged the keyboard as soon as the boot process started. However, once again at the language screen, plugging the keyboard back in still doesn't work.

Any other ideas? Would it be possible to achieve this leopard install through vmware? I have windows on another partition...

Well i seemed to temporarily fix the above error by pressing ESC during POST, which brought up the menu allowing me to select boot from CD. then I hit F8, typed -v and that's how I got back to the language screen,

Still no joy... Any thoughts on my vmware idea ^^ / another way to get around this problem?

Thanks for your help so far

i'm actually doing some trial and error too. so maybe you could bare with me. hahaha.. to try something new.

you can try :

1) as soon as you press enter and the kexts starts loading, remove your keyboard/mouse

or

2) let it boot till the language selection with your keyboard and mouse then remove it and plug it back in.
