badger15
First I'll admit that I am a long time Mac user who was tempted by the prospect of creating a super fast Mac for relatively cheap cost. So I did my research and built what I thought would be a pretty stable hackintosh. Unfortunately there seems to be one issue that I can't work out. All my hardware works great. My setup is as follows: P5K-E Board Intel C2D E6850 (3 GHz, not overclocked) 4GB 800 MHz OCZ RAM Seagate 320GB Sata2 (MBR, Kalyway 10.5.1 install, updated to 10.5.3) Seagate 160GB IDE (no OS files, just storage) PowerColor X1950 Pro (Bronya's patch. Resolution, QE, CI all working) Samsung S203 SATA DVDRW I have a couple issues. I never was able to get sleep to work. Sometimes I get the ATi logo, sometimes I can't start it back up at all. If I get the chance to shut down properly, it will do so maybe half of the time. More importantly I am getting what I think are kernel panics quite frequently. It usually happens if I am doing something more CPU intensive or if the computer has been running for some time. It always does it when I am running a torrent client. I will get the gray screen that comes down about half way and then a garbled mess on the rest of the screen. No warning to shut my computer off.. The computer is not OCed and I have tons of fans running, so there is no way it is getting too hot. Maybe I need to update some sort of kexts? I am not sure...I would like to start using this desktop for design work and I obviously can not count on it as it is. Any help from the geniuses here would be greatly appreciated!! vaporATX
Shutdown is hit or miss on this board unless you snuff all but the first core before shutting down. Restart and sleep works fine on my build on this board using the vanilla 9.3.0 kernel (10.5.3) and the 9.2.0 kernel (10.5.2). The KPs are caused by using the Jmicron controller with 4GB of ram. You can't use IDE drives with this board with 4GB+ of ram. This is a fine board for OSx86 as long as you know it's limitations and set it up properly. badger15
Thanks for the response Vapor. So, if I take my IDE drive out and turn off the controller in the bios I should have the panics? Thanks again. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/111537-kernel-panics-on-p5k-e-wkalyway-105-please-help/#findComment-790077 Share on other sites
vaporATX
That should fix it, yes. You could always get a external usb enclosure for your IDE drive. They you can use it for storage, cloning your main OS X drive for testing things, etc... Also, make sure you have these settings in your bios: Enable apic2.0, disable speedstep, disable c1e, enable VT and X. If you still get KPs let me know and I'll try to figure it out for you. I have a problem getting sound to work, but think it is something I have done and I refuse to buy a 3rd party board. I have not given up on that. Otherwise, I see stoppage of videos ONLY inside of a web browser like FireFox or Safari, not when I play QT or Flash movies in a movie application. 100% of my software works, including burning CDs with Toast 7 & 8, all Adobe CS2 and MS Office 2008.... on and on. I use 4 GB RAM and max it out all the time. I run VMWare Fusion/Vista constantly and never experience a problem all the while working perfectly in OSX 10.5.3 with 9.3 kernel. The trick is to ONLY buy RAM that the mobo manufacturer tested and certified, exactly, not one "close". I learned this from a PC builder who had the same problems for years when building high end PCs. He was dead on. I am using Jmicron (tried both ways) and zero problems. I boot from the SATA CD as well as write CD/DVDs. I cannot boot from an external USB nor FireWire disk, but I believe that is something to do with loading roms. I use IDE but cannot boot from an IDE/ATA CD/DVD drive. That I agree with. I could use help with why my audio does not work. I was told to match the kernel to the version of operating system, and install Taruga_AD1988b_rev3. No Joy!
