Mayim
Hi all. I have a Dell Optiplex GX 270 SFF. I have upgraded it with a newer Pentium 4 CPU which IS capable of SSE3, and have tried installing Leopard. Things seem to work... except randomly, with no warning, the system will lock up with the standard 'You need to restart your computer' prompt. This problem exists for BOTH Kalyway 10.5.2 AND iATKOS 2.0i BS. Has anyone run into this problem before? This problem does not exist on the same system under Tiger (XxX 10.4.11). --M Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/110211-leopard-kalyway-and-iatkos-randomly-locks-up-on-p4/ Share on other sites
Mayim
An update... After a lot of frustration, I think I may have solved this one (knock on wood)... it may actually be the network driver, com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet. There were bizarre networking problems with the Leopard driver (e.g. a complete inability to ping anything, even the router right across the hub... a problem which would then mysteriously go away by itself), and network activity tended to induce crashes faster... So what I did was replace AppleIntel8254XEthernet.kext (it's in /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/) with its counterpart from Tiger (XxX 10.4.11). Voila, it hasn't crashed so far. Here's hoping! I'm running a 'torture test' on the machine.. it's doing Rosetta@home crunching via BOINC, running a screen saver, and copying gigabytes upon gigabytes of files over the LAN over and over again. If it stays up for a day, I'll consider the problem solved.
