since i am having issues installing leopard on my hp due to hd issues, i was wondering if anyone has attempted to install this on a usb flash drive? i know the data rates aren't the greatest i am more or less looking for functionality at this point, i have a peice of software that runs more stable on mac os. i have a 16gb flashdrive on the way. read speeds were clocked at 33mb/s (ntfs) fat32 is slower, i'm not sure what the speed difference between fat32 and hfs+ are either but was thinkin about giving this a shot as an alternative to get something working. so on that note!

has anyone tried this yet?

Theoretically, you can install anything onto a USB Flash Drive, provided the BIOS will support HDD emulation. I have installed Windows 98 onto a flash drive before. It was slow but it definately worked. I also tried Windows XP, but it would get a BSOD because it would reset the USB bus when it boots and this would cause it to nolonger read the boot device, ie the flash drive.

Long story short: probably not. Mac OS X being a modern and intelligent system, unlike Windows 98 which will work with what its got and won't care where it boots from, will detect a USB bus and will reset it upon boot cause the boot device to disappear and it will cause a kernal panic.

Of course I'm just guessing and there are patches for Windows for these things, but as for OS X... I have no idea. But I'd say no you can't install on a USB Flash Drive

i understand where your coming from but wouldn't it technically be the same as installing it on an external hd and booting from that?

ok so i managed to install leo4all 10.5.2 v.2 on a 16 gb usb flash drive. after install it booted into the welcome section. went through all the setup and registration bs. don't get me wrong, it is a little slow but it did run. i get a window that pops up telling me that a kext couldnt load properly and it asked me if i wanted to fix it, so i clicked fix. after restart the boot hangs. i'm gonna do a fresh install again. does anyone know where i can find a lite version of leopard that will run on amd?all i really need it for is to run 1 program for the time being. i could care less about internet or audio output. i'm more or less looking for speed at this point<br>
