my HP laptop has dual 120 GB hard drives and I've had the second formatted for Windows for a looooong time, now....it's held my music library for years. Recently, I've noticed something strange when I process music in iTunes.....certain files are just plain disappearing. No rhyme, no reason, just gone.

Not like whole albums or folders....like one song from a Rammstein album....one from a Nightwish album....

Could this be a hard drive going bad? Something up with OSX86?

Any ideas?

I don't unmount it, period. It's my second hard drive in my laptop.

I figured out it likes specific songs....songs 5 and 10 from the Rammstein album Sehnsucht disappear...I'll restore them, and they disappear again. I think it may have something to do with iTunes.

Yes. They remain in the iTunes library, but when you click on them, bring up the grey exclamation point and ask you to locate the original file. I then go to the music folder and they are gone, nowhere to be found within either of my hard drives. This has happened like....3 or 4 times, now. I keep MP3 copies of the songs in a seperate folder to keep restoring them, haha.

So I've discovered something else which confounds my belief that this is an iTunes issue.

I think I mentioned here or somewhere else as to when I installed iAtkos v2, I had to replace iTunes because of a crashing error when editing or creating Smart Playlists and such. Well, it's been doing it again. It renews the problem just like it renews the disappearing files problem.

I'll trash iTunes and reinstall and open it up and creating and editng playlists will work just fine. Then, after awhile, it'll apparently "go bad" and start behaving like it's got a problem again.

Anymore ideas?

Could it be an iAtkos problem?

Bump.

I could really use some help, guys. I'd like to know what's going on. If my distro is bad I'd like to change over to something else, but if it's an easy fix, I don't wanna trash a perfectly good install.

Well, hello tharrrrr forum. I've had to start dealing with this problem after I realised that ~4000 songs of mine have been ...disappearing. It started about a year and a bit ago; as OP Mandell said, just certain songs would consistently disappear.

All the songs are stored on the one dell (wXP) hard drive. All 6 of the computer accounts save music to the same folder. 'Copy music' is on*; there really is nothing fancy set up. I don't use itunes store either, so downloading isn't really an issue...

But, starting with ~10 files, my music library has slowly disappeared, starting, as far as I can tell, with the oldest. I've tried replacing them, but they too disappear. It's like the whole library is slowly phasing out (no, they're not on the computer, they're not hidden [at least not under the same name..]).

What the hell is going on? I'm not one for exaggeration, but this IS pretty much a serious business.

* - that said, I don't see how this could matter unless i was throwing files around like a man possessed...
