I have a feeling that this post is too 'newbie' to get any replies, but here goes anyway:

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 (laptop), I want to install Leopard. I downloaded Kalyway 10.5.2, tried installing it both natively and with VMWare. Neither worked. The native installation gets stuck on the 'IOAPIC' error, which I believe nobody has been able to resolve, and the VMWare installation gives the 'ATA Disk: Checksum cookie not valid' error and hangs. When I use SCSI mode for the installation, it gives the "Still waiting for root device" error, proceeds to a grey screen with the 'rainbow' mouse pointer on it and hangs. And yet, YouTube has a video showing Kalyway running perfectly on this same machine.

And one more thing, what's with all these distributions? Kalyway, iAtkos, Leo4All, BrazilMac, Jas, ToH, and many more! It would be wonderful if someone could post a quick comparison. After all, they all install the same OS, right? Then what's the basic difference between, say Kalyway and BrazilMac? I don't want a MacOS that's crippled or has its functionality reduced in any way, but I also don't want a MacOS that's filled with GUI customizations and extra software. Just plain vanilla Leopard will do, as authentic as possible.

Please, has anybody been able to install Leopard successfully on the 1520? I'm ready to use any sort of configuration / distribution, though I'd prefer a VMWare install.

The waiting for root device has something to do with your hard drive. Thats what it is I believe. So possibly something to do with that in your BIOS. But really you'll just have to wait till someone else can clear it up.

The reason for all the different distros is...well this is a computer hacking scene, so no ones going for simplicity. And the differences are really to numerous to compare them easily.

The different releases have different components added and subtracted. You can save a lot by removing PowerPC code and leaving just the Intel code...Some releases are compressed into a .zip file which also reduces size.

iAtkos is tiny because he has removed Alex (the awesome speech voice) and chess, but everything else is there. Don't worry, you can put it right back if you use Pacifist. (I'll show you how)

However all the releases have the essential components of the OS, everything you need. I was worried about the same thing when I started out. When you compare Tiger Distros, Uphuck is a 1.1 gb download, whereas Jas is like 4.4gb!

I would recommend iAtkos, just because Macgirl says so.. It's never failed me either. Get iAtkos 2.0i.

Yeah, check it out:

I recommend you partition your HDD and dual-boot, it's always been the easiest/best for me.
