Hi, I'm new here so this could very well be an easy problem.

Ik just installed 10.4.1 on a Compaq Evo 1.7ghz desktop PC (intel SSE2). OSX running just fine, along with all native applications. Only sound is not working yet but that is the least of my troubles.

I cannot get ANY application to work after downloading it. I tried, MSN 7.0.0, firefox, camino, thunderbird, openoffice, neoffice, jabber, flash plugin for safari and the msn client with the green duck (forgot name :borg: ).

With all programs I downloaded the universal or intel type, where it was available. I tried multiple versions of all above programs, resulting in, nothing.

The icon jumps up and down one time in the dock.. end of story...

What am I doing wrong? AM I doing something wrong?

Thanx!

Try it out. I just found that with an SSE2 system, 10.4.11 rev2 is the most stable and has the best hardware support.

I found that leopard took a while to startup and just getting wifi working on it was a pain. I didnt even try to get my videocard setup.

But with 10.4.11, I just selected SSE2 package and my hardware and installed in abou 20 minutes.

Installation went perfect, until the reboot. All drivers were loaded succesfully until the last line, starting logon window application, then nothing. PC as silent as it can be, no harddrive humming, no DVD spinning, even after 15 minutes, nothing.

After 1 reboot, one more line, ntpdate[98]:no servers can be used, exciting ;)

what now?

ps. Eevery time I reboot it gets 1 line further... until after 4 reboots it is back at the "starting logon window application" line..

Ok, reinstall.. This time I made sure to erase the disk in the installation utility.

When I reboot after succesfull installation, with the installation DVD in it gives "System config file '/com.apple.boot.plist' not found". Without the DVD all the driver lines start flying over the screen until it reboots, this loop continues endless.

what is wrong here?

Last reply, solved the problem. The problem was the nVidia driver.

Installed 10.4.11, with only SSE2 base combo, all recommended patches, Intel 82562EZ NIC driver and generic AC'97.

Works! Sound plays as it should and I'm online.. Now lets find the driver for the nVidia Vanta ( ;) ) videocard.

Thanks all for your help!
