nfsfan
hi all i am in need of a little help since i have not been able to find a solution afer going through the forums for quite a while now..easybcd..grub..acronis..its too confusing..add to that i have a complex stiuation in hand.. so here it is.i just bought a 500gb hdd to aid my 160gb one..mow i plan to install on the 500gb one : vista and opensuse on the 160gb one leopard and ubuntu i am confused as to how much swap space to allocate..and can a linux on a drive access swap on other one... please do suggest me a way to handle this boot..vista will be the default option.. also since i will be nstalling all of the os's from scratch please suggest the order in which the os's should be installed.. i would be keeping ntfs as the data drive on both partitions.. Grub is the way to go. here is my guide. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=606752 In your case I would host grub on ubuntu -- because you won't have to enter the drive code booting OS X and because you will probably reinstall SUSE when its out of beta. SUSE handles the hardware change easily. I expect ubuntu does too, but I don't have personal experience. If your new graphics card is supported, OS X should be fine, but there are often issues. I had to switch from NVinject to Natit as I lost support with 10.5.3 Linux swaps on a 2nd HDD easily. You can share swap space with your two installs. How much swap you need depends on how much memory you have and what you want to do. I have 4GB and only set up 2GB swap for Linux -- and I don't think I even need that much -- only use it when editing videos or running multiple virtual machines. I have shared swap with 2 Linux installs, as I always test the new SUSE before wiping my old one. It runs faster on the other HDD. Might have to tweak fstab to do it. XP is a good idea. Add FreeBSD and you'll have 6 OSs. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108098-quad-booting-help/#findComment-771242 Share on other sites

I would install XP first, other than that installation order does not matter. Disable or unplug the 1st hdd if you need to install XP after Vista. Grub can "swap" the 1st 2 HDD when booting XP, as XP likes to be on the 1st HDD. Each OS should be in its own partition. XP and Leopard belong in primary partitions. Linux works nicely from an extended partition. Vista has a nice partitioning tool which I now use, before that I used parted. You can't use OS X Disk utility as it does not do non-destructive partitioning -- however, you can use it to "erase" a partition previously made with another tool -- which means format as HFS+ My setup is very similiar to yours. I have Vista and FreeBSD on 1st HDD, XP, Suse, OS X, and a FAT32 data partition on 2nd HDD. Boot into ubuntu Download the file You can copy using either a GUI File manager as su.
