alixir
Hey all, first Hackintosh install and all went smoothly, had to work a few things out first: Bios (A07), disabled mostly everything to do with onboard peripherals (Bluetooth etc) apart from Intel Speedstep(strange issues with Multiprocessing support such as non booting and crazy window/graphics happenings) and Wireless. Also turned on high speed USB to get that iPod copying quick as hell. I used a bit of a lazy install method. I already had XP installed so used Kalyway 10.5.1 install disc (selected Vanilla Kernel and MBR options for dual boot). Booted from DVD, partitioned 40gb (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and 20gb Fat 32 (with Master Boot Record) and installed. Took about 26 mins and once done, Mac booted eventually (after some playing around with bios as explained above!). I then went straight ahead and installed XP on the Fat partition. Then I got lazy and just reinstalled Kalyway Leopard again to seize the active partition back. Now this DELL reports 1.67ghz Intel Core Solo with Dual core switched off in BIOS and Speedstep on. If you turn Speedstep off, it reports 1ghz Intel Core Solo instead. Mac has been up and running for three days! Everything works graphically, wirelessly (rock solid), trackpad (bit stuttery occasionally) and very stable! Been up and on wireless for 2 days solid now. No overheating. Battery doesn't last too long though, probably an hour and a half. I've not installed any extra kexts as of yet, but might check some powermanagement at some point. I also haven't installed the latest BIOS from Dell A10. All my USB devices are being picked up, iPOD Griffin Imic (only way to get audio on Sigmatel as of yet). Downloaded and installed the Tomb Raider Anniversary Demo, runs pretty much okay, slows down when there's a lot of rendering to do onscreen, but it does play! Installed all my old Cubase, Kontakt, Absynth etc and ran under Rosetta. Handled two instances of Kontakt (about 20 midi channels) but crazy spikes and became unaudible occasionally. All other apps (Apple) run fine, just got my hands on Logic and AU versions of everything I used before so will re-post to let all know the usability as a DAW. That was my main interest! Also going to try VMWARE just to see what the possibility of at least running XP alongside Leopard comfortable is, even though you won't have Ethernet, but there's a USB solution for that too.... Hopefully I'll try that all soon. But as for most progs, no problems whatsoever...
