InsanelyPete
I currently have a dual g5 powermac, used exclusively for video editing in FCP2. I'd like to build a $500-600 osx86. I've read the most stable setup is Q6600 on BadAxe2. I'm not crazy about BadAxe the board has been out for a while, the chipset is old and other boards offer more for less money. I'd like to go with the 45nm Q9300 Yorkfield processor. My only concern is finding a stable mobo. You might ask why not get a Powertower? I only do video editing in my spare time, so its not worth dropping $2,500 on a computer. I'd be lucky to make that in one year's worth of work. It also be nice to have one system that could run windows or mac. I'm looking at the following boards, any input would be appreciated: $175 - Gigabyte EP35-DS4 edit: typo removed the extra "P" $150 - Gigabyte EP35-DS3P PS. Video cards seems hard to find a low price, low power dual video card. Don't want an expensive gaming card. edit: thx added your suggestion to my list. yah i need firewire Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/107817-p35-chipset-motherboards/ Share on other sites
abscheele
I would recomend a Gigabyte EP35-DS3L for about 90 usd on newegg it is completely compatible, and the EP35-DS3P is 150 usd and it includes firewire which you might want if you are doing video editing. The ATI Raedon 3850 is about 130 usd and a great fully compatible video card It's not bad for games either Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/107817-p35-chipset-motherboards/#findComment-764978 Share on other sites
fyr
Take care about P5K (without anything after the K) After the BIOS release 4.06 : NO MORE AHCI. The 4.06 BIOS is the latest BIOS with AHCI that you need with your MAC OS X. You can downgrade BIOS version with afudos 2.17 (after you can't) and use /N option It's because there is trouble with ICH9-R ? Or marketing reason ? LonelyTV
If you want to pay a little more you can buy yourself an Abit IP35-Pro. It's a rock solid board and only requires one patch (for audio) to work 100%. I've updated from 10.5.1 to 10.5.3 with no issues and 4+GB of ram works inside of Os X86 where as with my old Gigabyte board. It also has Firewire. Thats my two cents. I think this is the best board for Os X86 hands down. and on top of that New Egg has a $50.00 mail-in rebate for it right now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813127030 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/107817-p35-chipset-motherboards/#findComment-766181 Share on other sites
mansanas.org
I use my rig in video editing. If you want a bang for the buck with great compatibility with all the NLE Suites (Apple and Adobe) try my setup. It has been very reliable so far: CPU: Intel Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L (P31 + ICH7, ALC888, SATA, IDE/PATA Working OBB) OS: 10.5.2 (Kalyway, ToH 9.2.2 Kernel, EFI V8, GUID, Sleep, Restart & Shutdown Works) Mem: GEIL 2GB DDR2 800 MHz Video: Palit NV7300GT Sonic 256MB DDR3 with TV-Out (Using Natit Dual - hotplug after boot) HDD: SATA WD 160GB - System HDD: SATA WD 250GB - Media HDD: SATA WD 750GB - Media Optical: ASUS 20X DVD-WR DL, SATA Working Applications: FCP Studio 2, Adobe CS3 - Design and Production and etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/107817-p35-chipset-motherboards/#findComment-766519 Share on other sites

My understanding, and what swayed me from buying that exact board, was that it couldn't address more than 3.3GB of RAM. InsanelyPete
Have you tried to use more than 2GB of RAM? My understanding, and what swayed me from buying that exact board, was that it couldn't address more than 3.3GB of RAM. I read the same thing somewhere else about Gigabyte. Saying that if you have more than 3 sata devices that it can only address 3.3GB of RAM due to the 32bit controller. That's why I was interested in the EP35P-DS4 because it doesn't have this problem. The funny thing is everytime I think I've found the perfect board I read something I don't like. For instance, I read a bunch of negative reviews of EP35P-DS4 on newegg. I know some of those reviews are bad because the person didn't know what they were doing or got a defective board. Zaap
Is there an EP35(P)-DS4 that's different than the EP35-DS4? I just built a machine with the EP35-DS4 and couldn't be happier. Been doing Final Cut Pro and Photoshop work on it most of the weekend without a single hint of instability or flaky performance. Everything worked OOB except audio, but that was just a matter of ticking the realtek 889 driver on the install. The board has exceeded my expectations as far as performance- feels like 100% Mac Pro to me. (And I use the real thing every day at work). Some reviewer on newegg reported his EP35-DS4 Hackintosh blew up after he plugged a firewire device in, but I suspect he had some PSU issues or a bad board- no problems with Firewire or anything else here. This EVGA 8600GT is working great for me- it's $60 after rebate.
