Hey guys,

I'm building a new, budget, computer for hackintosh. Using some posts on this forum, and the HCL list, I've come up with some of the hardware i plan on using. However, I cannot find a suitable motherboard or graphics card. I plan on using this machine mostly for minor things, but would like for it to be able to use Final Cut Pro, relatively fast. Here's the hardware so far:

Processor $111.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115032

RAM $38.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820161182

DVD $25.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827118002

HD $0 Already have, 500 GB SATA WD5000AAKS

TOTALS: $176.97

I want to keep the price under $400, but if it goes over, it's fine.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a Fry's close by?

Fry's is running this awesome deal right now:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 and ECS 945GCT-M/1333 motherboard for only $160.

For $50 more you get a faster processor, and it includes a good motherboard with good compability!

thanks for the reply. I do not have a Fry's nearby. There is not one even in my state, nor region! I live in New Jersey, thats why newegg is the most convenient, since CompUSA is closed, and Best Buy and Circuit City don't seem to sell anything like motherboards etc.

The motherboard you told me (ECS 945GCT-M/1333) is also on newegg, but for about 50$. I cannot seem to find that bundle on their website either.

Thanks for the help though.

Pulling some parts from my "Cheap Hackintosh" post,

GIGABYTE GA-945GCM-S2C Intel 945GC Core 2 Quad Motherboard - $49.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128076

COOLER MASTER RC-340C-KKN1-GP Steel/Plastic Mini Case - $39.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...RC-340C-KKN1-GP

Coolmax V-400 400W ATX V2.01 Power Supply - $24.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...5&Tpk=V-400

And for a graphics card recommendation:

XFX PVT88PUHF4 GeForce 8800 GT 256MB Graphics Card - $129.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150278

That motherboard supposedly needs AppleAzaliaAudio.kext patch and then the board is right as rain out of the box. Don't know about the Graphics Card, but there are success reports of 8800GT cards on the Wiki and they seem to give the best bang for buck and Final Cut Pro will use the graphics power to make rendering faster.

Thanks Nick, but it seems as if the motherboard is pci express v1 as the graphics card supports pci express v2.

So I looked around at newegg, and found this graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130082

It is an "EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card".

I don't know whether or not it'll be compatible with osx86. If someone could help me, that would be awesome.

thanks in advance

The last PC i built was with the V-500 instead of the V-400 but it was pretty much silent. The nosiest thing in the whole case was the stock Intel CPU fan, even the eVGA 8800GT Graphics cards weren't too loud after extended play.

And sorry about the PCI Express x16 vs 2.0 thing, though some 2.0 cards will work in a 16x (aka 1.0) slot. That's what I did on a diff PC using another motherboard with a 1x slot and it worked fine.

I think the hardware is very comparable to my MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB Memory, 200GB Hard Drive, 8600M GT 256MB Graphics, 8x SuperDrive) and it runs Leopard quick as a whip. As long as your hardware is supported via kexts, which they should be with minimal hacking or using nvInject or whatever for the graphics card, it should run just as well if not better then my laptop.

I haven't checked for sure, but I would say most nVidia cards from the FX 5200 though the 8800 with 512MB or less memory should work in some way or another. ATI cards seem to be a bit more tricky. The real trick is to not get too new or too old because there is no driver support.
