Looks like, unless you have a time machine backup you'll have to reinstall. There are some other threads that may help you recover but software update isn't your friend right now.

Lesson learned: Don't let anyone use volatile equipment like that hack unless they know not to update anything. Better yet, what are you doing using a computer with no real support at work?

Terry

Well he bought the parts to make the build so that's why I am using it here at work. Its not my primary machine just an experimental toy. I just didn't want to have to scrap the harddrive and start over because I had a couple of movie projects and photo projects on there that I didnt want to lose. I normally back it up before I make any changes but unfortunately I didnt have a chance this time.

bump anyone??

Have you try to repair permissions on that disk with the System Install DVD?

Can you try login with a diferent user?

Find the file /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone, deleted it and the the Setup Assistant will ask you to create a new user.

If that works then the problem is with your user account, maybe trashing some preferences will help.

Thinking it again, it can be a problem with your files owner and group id.

You can boot in single user mode and find if you have full permissions to the files and folders in your home directory.

How would I do this? Sorry if its a stupid question but this was my first foray into Mac stuff so I am still learning
Just boot your system from your install disk. Let it go to the point where you can open disk utilities. Choose the disk with your osx on it and repair. Remove the installer dvd and reboot. There are no guarantees this will work, but if you didn't make a backup of your system, it's quicker than trying to re-install and reset all your parameters.

Repairing permissions on the disk right now. I will update soon

Edit::It found and repaired a couple of items but it is still doing the same thing. I get the logon screen, click the user name, enter the password, it pulls up a blank blue screen then goes back to the logon window

In the same drop down list as the disk utility there is a tool for reseting users passwords, use this tool. Just put the install dvd back in and try the tool for user management, you can reset the password for that account or probably the root account too. I forget the exact name of the tool but I think all the install disc's have it.
