thaseint Posted May 22, 2008 Share Posted May 22, 2008 Background: Alright so I was running Kalyway 10.2.5 for a couple weeks straight doing everything...from editing video, watching DVDs, using iTunes, editing photos, etc. and not once did I have a kernel panic. Now all of a sudden they are cropping up at great frequency and somewhat predictable. They seem to be related to Internet usage as I can do most anything else without getting a panic; but after using the Internet in either Safari or Firefox for about 15 minutes I'll get a panic. Sometimes as soon as I plug my USB wifi adapter in it might also crash, but more often then not it happens when Im doing stuff on the Internet. What I've done: I have tried repairing both permissions and the disk (no errors found). I have also cleared the Internet caches as well as program caches. Only things I've changed since I started getting these was my wired Apple aluminum keyboard; but even when I switched back to my standard USB keyboard I'd still get the panics. I'm going to try reinstalling my wifi drivers tonight. System: Intel DP965LT Intel 2.0ghz Core 2 Duo 2x 512mb DDR2 533 Nvidia 7300GT Belkin MIMO G+ USB Any ideas or recommendations? thaseint Posted May 23, 2008 Author Share Posted May 23, 2008 Alright...I just set my kernel flag to "debug 0x100", so I'll see what it says when it happens again. So far everything is stable and now that I'm looking for a kernel panic....nothing. Craziness I tell ya! EDIT: After doing some reading it sounds like the "debug 0x100" flag only applies to panics that occur during the boot process. Is there some other way for me to see whats causing the panics or does this flag also display information regarding all panics, even those that occur inside the GUI? mschilling Posted May 24, 2008 Share Posted May 24, 2008 Did you try 10.5.1 previously to 10.5.2? I'm wondering if that would be any different in crashing. Also I noticed it say 9.2.0 at the bottom. I'm on 9.2.2 according to sys profiler. I'm not sure why that would be different. I used 10.5.1 and updated with the combo updater. I went from Kalyway 10.5.1 to 10.5.2 (using the combo update). I then upgraded the kernel from 9.0 to 9.2. I did some further research on the KP and found that this is actually a problem that has not yet been addressed by Apple. Try reinstalling that driver and see what happens and whether that helps. Also see whether you can find an updated driver. Its definitely related to that though. Worst case scenario, find a card that works with OS X, and do a reinstall choosing only THAT driver. I get a very similar KP, but only sometimes when I'm starting up. Mine also complains about some IONetworking {censored}. Here is my thread with my pics of the KP I am experiencing. thaseint Posted May 29, 2008 Author Share Posted May 29, 2008 Here's an update...I reinstalled the RT73 and removed the Belkin Wireless Utility. I ran all the maintenance stuff using the OSX86 tools and repaired permissions/disk. I am now using the RALink Wireless Utility (RTUSB D70-1.1.3.0 D71W-1.1.7.0 UI-1.3.0.0_2006_11_10.dmg...found it floating around), which has been working fine...now the only time I get a KP is when I'm using Transmission and then try to download something or watch a video in safari/firefox/camino. I'm still not 100% sure of what caused (or is causing) the problem, since both the RALink and Belkin Wireless utility appear to be identical, although their file size is slightly different. All I know is that I have not had these KP's since doing all of the above...
