Tom_ Posted February 28, 2006 Share Posted February 28, 2006 After testing Sheepshaver 2.3 for OSx86 under native v.10.4.3 and 10.4.5 here are the results and warnings: 1) You can boot the installer CD Mac OS 9.0 but can't be install because it have only 16 KB of built-in RAM and is not enough memory to install it. 2) The configuration file that is use it for configurate all Sheepshaver and can configurate there more built-in memory (for example: "ramsize" parameter) have the problem of create that file, because you must use the file name ".sheepshaver_prefs" and when you do that then you get and error: "You cannot use a name that begins with a dot ".", because these names are reserved for the system. Please choose another name." and with another name, Sheepshaver doesn't recognize the prefs file. CONCLUSION: Can't change the built-in memory and can't install the system. If someone knows a way to fix this, please, let me know. Could be my fault in installation procedure but don't see a solution at this point. 3) After using this version of Sheepshaver, you can find another problem... it crash the main HD with Mac OS X Tiger and dissappears from the Desktop and you need to reinstall all Tiger again (and format the HD) to recover the HD on the desktop. When HD crash is not unmounted, is there, but you lost the icon of the HD on the desktop and can't do a double click to open it. OK... Sheepshaver 2.3 for OSx86 is an experimental version... but is very buggy... In my opinion, this emulator need a nice GUI to configurate the preferences. WE NEED THIS EMULATOR because Classic environment is lost under OSx86 and is a HUGE bunch of applications that are very useful and will never be ported to OSx86. And will be nice if Sheepshaver can boot Mac OS 9.2.2 in the near future that at the moment doesn't boot. Looking for a solution to have Classic Environment under OSx86.... Anyone? Thanks. In a terminal windows use the following command : sudo mv sheepshaver_prefs .sheepshaver_prefs 3) To avoid this problem, you MUST configure extfs parameter (in .sheepshaver_prefs) to a local folder (as mentioned in the official sheepshaver faq). To repair errors, you can you SetFile command. After renaming the filename with sudo mv sheepshaver_prefs .sheepshaver_prefs the file dissapears and can't be found it. I try all the correct configuration and crash after booting and when it got the Finder under OS 9.
