ifconfig network setup help

[bullsonparade]

need to specify ip x.x.x.x

with gateway x.x.x.1

subnet 255.255.255.0

and DNS DNS1

DNS2

 

i've tried the following

 

ifconfig en0 inet x.x.x.x (as well as variations on this with broadcast and netmask)

 

route add default x.x.x.1

 

then added:

 

nameserver DNS1

nameserver DNS2

 

to /etc/resolv.conf

 

this didn't work, please someone point out what I did wrong. Of course, the network wizard crashes which necessitates this.
