Rick aka Rictorg
So, I'm a long time Windows user who took the plunge and built a hackintosh. This fourm walked me through my hardware problems, and I'm working perfectly (except sleep & reboot). I find Leopard to be pretty cool, and intuitive (though I keep double-clicking on the top frame of the window hoping for it to maximize, and keep looking for the taskbar to switch windows). I've given Office and iWork a try, and look forward to messing around in Garageband. So, what's next? What apps might keep me in Leopard? Where can I learn how to do the more advance things I know in Windows (or why I don't need to do those things?) Essentially, why did I bother with this project? Your responses are appreciated! th0rgal
ha! good question! I also went through the same process, shouted a big shout when it was all done, running smooth and looked shiny and then ... then what ? I am happy using linux in all my boxes, I rarely but do use winXP (because of my girlfriend mainly) but what will I use OSX for ? ... Well, 1st of : a triple boot screen is really impressive when friends come by and realize that I have 3 completely different OSes installed 2nd : I wanted to check if the noise around OSX greatness was justified ... mmmm ... I still have to dig it because to me it just looks like a shiny Ubuntu (same way of treating the root user, sudoers, home directory, etc). 3rd and most important : I want to play around the Audio Units plugins. I use linux everyday for my music work with jack applications (Ardour being the main one). But plugins in linux are a bit of a lottery when it comes to quality. VST is possible but poorly handled, lottery again although I must say Wine really progressed a lot and I use 2 VSTis without a glitch. Now, Ardour comes native in OSX (no need of X11.app) and I tought it could be used from my OSX install with Audio Units plugins. I just need to get hold of the PCMCIA cardbus to interface with my RME Multiface II. If all goes well, I could think about bringing the laptop on stage ... but again, my good old debian could be enough if these OSX plugins are not worth the effort ... Rick aka Rictorg
I haven't tried to do any triple booting yet. Still, that doesn't give me much to do. I have been my OSX box exclusively for the last week or so, including my work from home day on Tuesday. It’s nice and all, but I guess I don’t see the allure of using it instead of Windows. It seems that the pluses (OSX feels very responsive, intuitive, and visually stimulating) don’t outweigh the negatives (software compatibility). I don’t use a computer to use the OS; in fact, all I ask of an OS is that it get out of its own way while I use an application. So with that, what’s the killer app for OSX? knewsom
there are a TON of killer apps for Mac. Final Cut Studio, Logic, Adobe Creative Suite, Shake, Lightwave, Cinema 4D, you name it. Just about every major software title exists also for Mac. Start off basic - give iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD a try - it's very easy to do some very cool things with those. Try Garage Band, even if you're not a musician! These are apps that DONT exist on windows. If you're wondering why you're using osx, remember that the odds of you getting a virus are now extremely slim, and most everything is just going to work. If you want as os that requires you to constantly tinker and tweak everything, go back to windoze or linux. I've been a mac user a long time, never could stand windows - everything seemed needlessly complicated. Once you get past the initial hurdles of using a new os, everything beings to seem like second nature - the interfaces are very logical and intuitive... the os really DOES just get out of the way, and that's why I love it. I'm curious what software compatability (other than games) you're concerned about? Yuusharo
It all depends on what you want to do. If you're a major PC gamer, chance are Leopard won't hold your attention for long. For content creation, like video or sound editing, you'll fall fast in love with it. For surfing the internet and basic tasks, 50/50. I setup my hackintosh with the ultimate goal of video editing, but had to start slow getting used to the OS and many alternatives to my windows programs like IM, web browsing and viewing my media. Once I got the core feel to it, I started pushing the limits with iMovie and Final Cut Express. I just recently bought a student edition of Adobe Premiere CS3 that runs insanely better than Premiere Pro 2.0 did on Windows XP, and the system is still completely stable. I think if you give it some time, you'll find yourself using OSX as your primary OS. The only thing I use Windows for is gaming, and that's only because Apple isn't taking gaming seriously. And even then, thanks to programs like Crossover Games, I can play many online games natively on the Mac install without ever rebooting. Rick aka Rictorg
Well, I think I found what I was looking for. Front Row + Apple Remote = Awesome! =) I've been running Vista on my PC for a while simply because it has Media Center built in. While I certainly like all the fun stuff cropping up around Media Center, I don't take good advantage of it as I don't use my PC as my DVR. Front Row seems perfect for me... it looks great on the TV, the remote is extremely intuitive, a That said, I'm in the middle of a Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword game with my buddies, so I'm going to go dual boot. I guess I can't get away from Windows in the end.
