dougaa
Is anyone else concerned by the fact that the current patch solution uses the 10.4.4 kernel for 10.4.5? I'd argue you're not really running 10.4.5 in that case, but a hybrid of 10.4.4 and 10.4.5. It's probably ok because 10.4.5 is only one release away from 10.4.4, but it doesn't seem workable as a long term solution. At some point the 10.4.4 kernel will probably not work with the next new release. I'm wondering if Apple has in fact found a way to prevent us from getting much past 10.4.4/10.4.5. ccihon
Maxxuss indicated the only difference in the code for kernel .4 versus .5 were items specific to the core duo and may some other newer Intel chips....and it seemed to me the intent was to patch those and use future kernel. Truth is, the more specific Mac hardware is, the more specific the OS and driiver set will be. But so far, everything has had some patch or work-around. JE
I imagine since the sourcecode for Darwin is open source that perhaps we'll be able to work around the requirements by compiling our own kernels. Granted, I'm probably wrong. Microsoft Windows XP was created in 2000.. there are a number of people out there without even SP1, and they operate fine, even if outdated (and well, virus ridden.) I imagine we would still figure out something in the long term. 10kelvin
xnu kernel source has been forked by Apple and is no longer publicly available. 10.4.3 was the last xnu source before the fork. They hav also split some portions of previously public projects into non public, but xnu is by far the most important. I hope the debugger is not next.
