mikelikespie
Hi, I'm having issues when there's a lot of hard disk access. I get crashes when I do things that are very IO intensive. I'm using 10.5.2, with the combo update. Any thoughts? Thanks, Mike Lewis
BigPimpin
What crashes? Or does the whole machine freeze up? Did it not used to do this or is it a fresh install? If it just started all of a sudden my first guess would be some sort of hardware problem. Re-boot and look at the log file for errors. I think there's something in the Applications Utility folder called "Log Viewer" or "Console" that will let you examine the log files.
mikelikespie
It's been doing this since the beginning. I tested my RAM. I'll check out the logs when I get home. It's the gray screen type crash.

Red Herring
Bingo. With 4GB, a part of that 4GB is wrapped above the 32b boundary, which causes the storage drive to blow it's brains out. I bet if you watch your Activity Monitor, memory usage, it will happen very repeatedly when you get to about 3-3.3GB of RAM used. Solution: Go into your BIOS. Disable the option to map memory to 4GB. Depends on motherboard, but might be termed "DRAM recovery", "DRAM Remap", or such. On my Asus P5KC, it's "Memory Remap Feature". Set this to disabled. Instant stability. When you boot, it should show ~3.3GB of DRAM. Yes, you just lost 700MB of DRAM.
