SDRacer48
Hi All, I have a problem with Samba Server/Client. My current home machines' setup is... Ubuntu-Desktop (Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon 7.10) Sharing volumes "Share" and "Multimedia" Cody-Laptop (my acer running windows xp) Sharing volumes "home" and "share docs" Server (my homeserver running windows 2000) Sharing volumes "webserver" and "homeserver" I have Ubuntu-Desktop sharing two volumes which are "Share" and "Multimedia". I can acces both of these partitions from both machines: Cody-Laptop and Server. So my Ubuntu-Desktop machine acting like a server is fine. But, my Ubuntu-Desktop acting as a client is not working. When I navigate to Places > Network > Windows Network > mshome in Ubuntu. It give me the message 'Sorry, couldn't display all the contents of "Windows Network: mshome"'. I have searched for months for the solution to no avail. It is extremely frustration, and it is basically the only thing keeping me from switching to Linux full time. Does anyone have any ideas. Thank you in advance, Cody

GFree
There's a chance your Ubuntu desktop is lacking the samba client. You obviously have the samba server running properly, but from what I understand the ability to read windows shares requires a samba client, separate from the samba server, so they're not necessarily one and the same (I think). You could try opening synaptic and do a search for samba stuff, see what's available, install what looks useful for supporting the protocol, restart the machine if necessary. Failing that, consider learning how to use smbmount command. Use it to connect directly to a share if required, which will at least show you what you're missing hopefully. This is all a bit of guessing though, since windows shares generally work for me but I've had troubles in the past; it's not entirely reliable. When I go to the synaptic package manager, it says I have the Samba Client installed, and the other packages that are needed. I just have no clue what the problems is, and everywhere I search, a solution is always found, but never explained in detail, or pertains to me... I feel this is almost hopeless... smbmount? I'll try it later...
