8.10.* Gives me error messages like /etc/rc: line 226: 26 Illegal Instruction kextd

Please run grep -n "" /etc/rc | grep "22.:" to show us the content of the line 226 (and the lines around it).

Just copy and paste it here. I'm unsure why you get this error. Are you using Tubgirl's AMD Release or this XXX thing?

edit: Anyone can confirm System Profiler is not working?

Maybe we need the bin, sbin stuff too. Need to have a closer look.

220: echo "Configuring kernel extensions for safe boot"

221: touch /private/tmp/.SafeBoot

222: kextd -x

223:else

224: echo "Configuring kernel extensions"

225: kextd

226:fi

227:

228:if [ -f /etc/rc.installer_cleanup ]; then

229: /etc/rc.installer_cleanup multiuser

Is what grep returns

I'm using an updated version of JaS 10.4.8, and I patched and upgraded myself up to 10.4.11 I just never updated the kernel because it wouldn't work

On a slightly different topic, is iTunes and all that safe to download straight from apple on an AMD machine?

EDIT: iTunes freeze on preferences confirmed. Can't get to System Profiler anyway because I can't get to the About This Mac window, probably due to loginwindow.app

UPDATE: When iTunes 7.5 is installed via Software Update the preferences window no longer freezes, however some of the text is missing and when you go to advanced, iTunes will shut down completely. Neither Console nor dmesg shows anything interesting

Yeah, the update works for me so long as I use 10.4.8's kernel, otherwise I get either kernel panics or freezing on bootup, and I upgraded straight from 10.4.8 to 10.4.11 as well

EDIT: So as it turns out, the only kernel I've been able to use so far has been the 8.8.1 kernel. Everything else simply doesn't work and I'm not quite sure why. I'll try replacing the extensions now, see what happens

UPDATE: Okay, after updating all of the kernel extensions, besides the ones that should be left behind, I'm still having the problems with the kernel. As I've said before 8.8.1 will still work, however 8.9.1 throws a kernel panic with no backtrace and 8.10.3 throws Illegal Instructions on kextd and loginwindow.app (there's more, I just can't remember what they are right now). I hope theres some way to fix all this, as I would really like to have an up-to-date kernel, and my About this Mac and System Profiler still do not work, no matter what I do. If anybody needs more info, I'll be happy to provide it, I just want to get this stuff fixed.

Finally as an update to before, the 8.11.1 amd kernel panics on AppleACPIPCI and it's dependents, and IOPCIFamily

System Profiler fix

Click me for Profiler Fix!

Add to /System/Library/System proflier/

Then chmod and chown

No need to even reboot!

And the problem with iTunes Prefs is a CPUID that hasn't been patched, run Marvin to see what it finds.

I'm not having this problem. The one with about this mac, I mean.

If we fix all these things, maybe it can be put in a central topic?

I would still like to see the iTunes frameworks fixed, so I'm going to look for a fix for that.

Also kramer, I wouldn't have a clue where to find those framework :(

From this topic. If i recall correctly, page 2 :P.

How the heck are you able to test system profiler if you can't login? :S

I messed a bit with frame works, and putting these back:

/Volumes/Mac Bak/System/Library/Contextual Menu Items
/Volumes/Mac Bak/System/Library/Frameworks
/Volumes/Mac Bak/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks

Made iTunes' preferences act normal. Not sure which though, I'm in the proces of testing a bit.

Especially since Photoshop CS3 acts funky. Doesn't want to save as, or use the built in web save function.

Well, thing is, it's not just the preferences that got messed up. It's the get info screen of songs as well. I'm sure a lot of other apps got some bad juju too.

Only thing good about this update, is safari 3.0.4. And I can't really find the framework to get just that working.

I think a lot of things just didn't get decrypted the way they should have. Like a lot of frameworks.

I think everybody is still better off using 10.4.10. Not even the .11 kernel works for AMD yet.
