we seem to have run into a problem whilst installing OSX on my system with this hardware spec:
- Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz / 1333 / 6MB
- 2xPowercolor HD4850 1GB GDDR5
- 4x2GB OCZ Gold PC2-6400 CL5
- Seasonic M12II-750w
- Win7 HDDs: WD Velociraptor 600GB / WD Caviar Green 1TB
- MacOSX HD (Planned): WD Caviar Black 500GB

we can't seem to install OSX when the 2 GPUs are in their PCI slots. The guy who is helping me build the rig sent me a text message the other day saying "boatloader will not work with Crossfire 4850. If single 4850, DVI-to-VGA is the only thing that works plus it seems it doesn't have acceleration".

Now I do understand that OSX does not recognize Crossfire in the first place (that's where the Win7 comes in), but is there a way or a workaround to install OSX without having to remove the other GPU? Or can we initially install OSX without the other GPU then pop in the 2nd GPU when the installation is successful? Won't that drive OSX or whatever is making it work nuts?

I'm not really finicky on which OSX version to run as long as I can use Adobe CS5 or CS6, Ableton Live and FL Studio in it.

Well for starters I'd suggest you pluck one of the 4950s out and run a single on to just OS X installed.  I'd suggest that you use Mountain Lion because my 4850 worked natively with OS X (Sapphire brand).  Once you get OS X installed, we can worry about getting the second 4850 working I've seen Netkas get two gpus working in which one was an ati branded one so it isn't impossible but of course will require some work.

Funny you found out FL Studio was Windows only because I was gonna bring that up to you.

I've always assumed majority (if not all) of music softwares initially ran with Mac hardwares then ported to Windows HEHE

someone is helping me build my Hackintosh - a more experienced guy when it comes to building PCs. it's his first time to build a Hackintosh with an ATi GPU that's why we ran into problems and he just told me he was trying to install a retail version of OSX and not a modified OSX installer / build. so I guess we're both learning along.

Not ported no but most major music programs are ran on Macs though exception being FL Studio though =\

It's good he's going down the retail route as it's always tends to be the least problematic route going down when getting OS X up and running.  Just post back when you have the install up and one 4950 running it should be able to get you to the desktop without any major issues.

got the rig up, but with only 1 GPU as of the moment. will try 2 GPUs over the weekend. but so far, 10.7.2 works - resolution is proper, monitor sleep mode works and I'm using DVI to DVI connection. the only thing I noticed is that Lion detects the card as 4800 and not as 4850. can that be corrected or not?

well i do still have issues, but I'm not sure if it's related to the GPU. whenever i restart OSX, i get a KP twice on the next boot, so I'm forced to do a hardware reset but on the third, it just boots up properly. there's another one with regards to turning off OSX but i just noticed it this morning, might be a fluke though. the reset is what kills it.

Cosmetic with the name. If it really bothers you, you can change the name with a DSDT edit.

With Two GPUs you will most likely need a DSDT with the proper edits to get the cards to play nice together, This is how I had two AMD 6870's and one Nvidia GTX 580 running together at the same time...

just installed the 2nd 4850 and no luck on booting it. if it's not asking much could you please tell me which DSDT I need? I'm already over at a site that has a bunch of DSDT and other files looking for a solution. I'm quite clueless on what to do being a n00b, trying to learn as I go though.

well this is just strange, i tried booting with GraphicsEnabler=No and here I am using my 10.7.3 with correct resolution and DVI-to-DVI connection.

dual Powercolor HD4850 1GB GDDR5 boots with GraphicEnabler=No, correct resolution, DVI-to-DVI connector and I guess QE/CI works, desktop animation works and I'm playing a browser based game right now.

DSDT injection would most likely solve your issues. Post a IOreg form the IOreg app so I can see if QE is running.

got this one sorted out actually. but i'm kind of interested to know whether QE is running. my only hunch that QE is running is that i was able to play NOVA 2 last night without any problems. but, would i be able to spot whether QE is running (or not) on my own with iOReg?

with regards to the cosmetic changes via DSDT injection, I have a DSDT file, what would I search there to change it? tried looking for ATi, Radeon to no avail. there's a need for me to learn what me and everybody is doing that's why I'm asking.
