My Sandy Bridge notebook needs a Macbook Pro 8,1 smbios.plist for the HD3000 to be recognized (earlier smbios plists don't work) and my webcam (which is fully detected by System Profiler) only works with Photobooth when I use CamTwist with the lower 320x240 resolution (Skype only works from time to time) or else I only get black screen. In contrast to the iSight used in earlier MacBooks the 8,1 uses a Factime HD camera. Could this problem somehow be related to that fact? Is it possible to tell OS X to generally use the low resolution?

Yes, I already knew that. Like I wrote in my first post, everything works when I use Camtwist. But I'm looking for a permanent solution without having to run other programs.

If you have a black screen in Skype with camera name recognized then, you need nothing except to remove IOUSBFamily.kext from E/E and u will be fine. I had the same prob, i solved it myself after 1 mnth of trying this and that with no help from anyone.
Check for iousbfamily text and don't let ur system load two same kexts twice.
Good luck

Remove IOUSBFamily.kext? Are you sure? Wouldn't that stop all my USB devices? Or do you mean that you had the IOUSBFamily.kext in both /E/E and /S/L/E? Doesn't understand what you mean with "load two same kexts twice". Since Lion I have no kexts in /E/E anyway.

Of course. If you remove that extension (in case have only one in /S/L/E) you will lose the USB ports. And the webcam is attached to USB, so... is NOT recommended.
